Apoppin you always inspire controversy and endless responses, which is a good thing I suppose considering it helps to make the forums more exciting.
But....
1) We don't have confirmation that R500 will actually come out in less than a year, or am I missing something? Yes sure ATI has to provide a card with PS3.0 support before Xbox 2 is launched, but no one knows if Xbox 2 will launch next summer; what if it too gets delayed?
2) We don't know how fast R500/NV50 will be (4x the shading power? ok these are all marketing claims we've all heard of before that often don't live up to the hype). Even if it is 2x faster than X800xt/6800Ultra, wouldnt someone with a 6800gt or x800 card have the right to say that R500 is junk and because its "only" 2x faster than X800xt, and say that they'll wait for R600/NV60? Well they'll be in the same position as you are right now -- which is getting them nowhere in their argument dissing the new high end cards.
All you are arguying right here is that it is not worth upgrading for 2x more performance and for you 4x more performance is required to take the plunge. Fair enough, but that doesnt take away the greatness of the current generation of videocards. You cant expect videocards performance to be 10x more every year; you have to be more realistic. Also the jumps from 8500 to 9700, or 5900 to 6800u can be considered equally great. Whether as the jump from 4200 to 5900 and 9700 to 9800xts werent considered to be phenomenal. So again, what makes you think NV50 and R500 will be THAT MUCH faster, and not 30-50% faster considering they are only 1 year away? I mean it doenst take much for ATI to add PS3.0 support (just 60 more million transistors).

FFactory0x, with regard to your question, it all depends on how often you upgrade. If you don't upgrade often, then go with 6800 or x800pro because they will last you longer than the 9800pro. 6800 comes iwth far cry so if you dont have that game and you want to play it, consider its cost to be even less. Otherwise X800pro seems to offer a great bang for the buck in the performance category since price wise it is 18% more expensive than 6800 card, but is often 2x faster than it. If you care about doom 3, then 6800 is also faster than the x800pro card.
Of course this is somewhat irrelavant now that I think about it, since you dont play with AA/AF enabled...hmm...then just get a 9700 non-pro for $150.
