X800PRO Opinions?

Hey guys, I have been thinking about getting a 6800NU but now I am leaning towards an X800PRO A local store has finally got some of those in, and the price is not bad, about the same as a 6800GT, but the store has no ETA's on any GT's and I am anxious as hell to get a new card, looking for some feedback on this card, I know the GT beats it in some APPS' but I am going to be a heavy HLF2 player, as well as World of Warcraft, and Meal of honor Pacific Assault, how much of an improvement is the X800PRO over the 9800 PRO. Is the x800pro worth double the 9800 pro ? As thats basicaly the cost for me here.

Cheers, and thanks for any feedback!! (Great boards here)

personally, i would jumo on it if it had the rage theather chip and soft mod it to an XT

either way, the X800 pro and the 6800 GT are more or less equal. they often exchange blows

If I were you, I will wait for the GT to be in stock before making any decisions. Unless you need the new card badly now.

I'm in Canada so it's not so easy there arnt as many sites to buy from, newegg does not ship here, the store I can buy from is selling the GT Leadtek for $699 and this X800 PRO for $599 It is the ATI Version.

gee whiz!!
the GT is like 540 american and the pro is about 460 american?!!!

can't you have someone you know buy you a gt in america for ~400 and send it out to you?

Dang, I'd make friends with someone in the states and have them order it for you, reimbursing them later. Or hop across the border and buy from a BB or CompUSA. 699 for a GT and 599 for an X800 Pro are downright ripoffs.

The X800PRO for $599 is the cheapest they can be found in Canada, I don't know anyone in the states so that is my problem, what is so bad about the X800 PRO, I have a HDTV and the pack-in HDTV hookup sounds awesome to me, D3 on my 47'' widescreen roar!

On the whole how much does the Geforce 6800GT beat the X800PRO are we talking 5 or less frames or what, ?

read anandtechs doom3 and HL2 stress tests. the pro is a damn fine card....the gt is just better, but not 100 canadian better.

In some games. However, most of the gaps will widen as games are written to take advantage of SM3, 32bit precision and the GT's 16 pipelines to the X800 Pro's 12 pipelines, Sm2.x, and 24bit precision.

The GT is a much more 'futureproof' card than an X800 Pro. However, both deliver plenty of power for today's software. 🙂

I like the Pro becasue of it's 6AA.

Here?s a review with 12 game benches. The GT and Pro each won 6 at 4AA/8AF. The GT was better on OGL the Pro was better in DX.

3dextreme

Both of these Video Card show nVidia and ATI bringing everything to the table. There's no wrong choice. Our nod would have to go to the eVGA 6800 GT for the technological advancements made by nVidia this generation, however for all around gaming the X800 Pro would be my choice.

don't let the fanboys try to dicate which is better. get whichever you want, you'll be happy with it.

i have both, and both have their strong points. while the gt is a bit faster, with the exception of doom3, you could not tell the difference in performance when playing (i run d3 1600 2xaa/4xaf on the GT; the pro has to run it at 1280 2xaa/4xaf, and frankly the image quality difference is minimal).

the PRO is more compact, quieter (tho the GT isn't really loud imo, just louder than my pro), and runs cooler.

the gt supports sm3, but it's arugable whether it will offer any tangible benefits over ati's sm2b. still, i've always felt more features was a good thing. imo ati's aa is still slightly better, and nvidia's af has the edge, although it's almost as crappy as ati's (gf4 has the best texture filtering; nvidia has gone downhill in that area the last 2 generations). overall tho, the iq difference is something you would have to stare over screenshots to see. they're pretty comparable.

i prefer nvidias drivers for features, but the new ati control panel looks promising (if not bloated, lol).

if you're into overclocking, both of the cards i have overclock well, tho the impact on performance isn't that great.

all things considered, i think the GT may be the best "bang for the buck" card this generation, but if you can get the pro with vivo (has rage theatre chip), it's a no brainer, and even if it's the vanilla PRO, it's a fine card.

I thought I read on one of the forums that EVGA would ship to Canada for regular MSRP. Maybe look into that if you really want a GT.

If I was going to choose between a 6800NU and a x800Pro. I think I would definitely get the X800. I'm not sure if the X800 is worth twice the amount of the 9800Pro. The thing I would be worried about as far as getting a 9800Pro is being disappointed and having to upgrade again within a few months when all the new games come out.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

You also might want to consider a 6600GT when they come out later this month. Might be a bit cheaper?

I'd still find a buddy in the States that could help you out in the future. Those Canadian prices are a reall rip off.

In your case the x800 pro would be the better choice!

I think the 6800GT is a better overall gaming card over the x800Pro, but that doesn't mean the x800Pro is slow by any means. It'll handle any game out there as long as the CPU does it's part.

Gaming is not everything for me though. I watch a lot of DVDs on my machines and the ATI cards have always been the best in this area. Also, I like the direction in which the Catalysts Team is taking with the drivers and software. Software support was the main reason why I jumped ship from 3dfx to nVidia a few years and is the reason why I'm sticking with ATI for the time being.
