X800 Pro second thoughts

ATi hasn't announced any cards to compete directly with the 6800 NU or 6800 UE that I know of, though there's rumors of an X800 SE for $300 vs. the 6800.

(And the "Platinum Edition" was only added because they wanted more to differentiate it from the 9800XT than just a single character, can't remember where I read it though.)

Doesn't matter what they're meant to be... the market will dictate what cards compete with eachother. The 5800 Ultra was meant to compete with the 9700 Pro... and as we all know, it wasn't much of a competition =)

*EDIT* Also... I don't see how the x800 Pro was designed to compete with the 6800GT since the 6800GT wasn't announced until the x800 Pro was announced... and it would be pretty dumb of ATI to release a 12 pipe card to compete with a 16 pipe card no matter how superior they think they are in terms of efficiency and real world performance.

It'll probably be a tad expensive and end up competing with the 6800 Ultra Extreme. The x800XT will compete with the 6800 Ultra. The x800Pro will compete with the 6800. ATI doesn't seem to have anything to compete with the 6800GT. nVidia may lose 6800 Ultra sales because of the GT... and they probably realize that and may only make a certain number of them in an attempt to get people to buy the Ultra when they can't find the GT. So... when you see 6800GT's for sale, as long as reviews don't indicate otherwise, I'd buy one the first chance I get.

You do realize, that there IS NO X800XT RIGHT? ITs called the X800XT PLATINUM EDITION, which will cost you 500 DOLLAS. The price range will make it a direct competitor to WHATEVER NVIDIA HAS AT 500 DOLLAS. And NO, Nvidia isn't going to come out with a > $500 card, period.

and you know this how? pricing has not been announced for ultra "extreme".. also, nvidia does not set card prices, rather chip prices. as a matter of fact, gainward has announced an nv40 card well in excess of $500...

Hmmm, I was under the impression that there would be... looking back at the reviews I don't know where I got that... maybe just from the different names used by difference sources... x800XT and x800XT PE. Oh well... I still think ATI needs a couple more cards to compete... especially if they're going to price the x800 Pro at $400... specifically a 16 pipe card that could be the choice for an overclocker.

Thats a bunch of bull from gainward, no one will buy that card. Its an overclocked Ultra, which is like.. an overclock GT. God, even a GT can reach Ultra Extreme clocks.

As for the X800Pro, The 4 pipeline difference SHOULD be enough to deter anyone away from that card. Unless it actually cost 300 bucks, it's NOT good frames/dollar at 400 dollars.

Oh, and I wasn't really yelling. I was just pointing out something that I thought was obvious but no one else mentioned throughout the entire length of the thread. Since this thread was based on whether or not the X800 pro was worth it, making good valid comparisons is important and for people to see clearly.

It's way better than Nvidia's 12 pipeline $300 card. IMO it should/will be around $350. Though if ATI enables softmodding, that might drive X800 pros over the GT.

How true. The X800 Pro is only like 20 some dollars more than the 9800XT at ABS (in a system 🙂, but still)
