X800 Pro running hot

Just bought a new X800 Pro....ATI branded. Using stock cooling and I am not overclocking it.

Problem is, when I play games with it, the ATI Tool temperature gauge is showing GPU temps reaching upwards of 70-75 degrees C. That seems pretty high to me. When not gaming, it falls to the mid 50s or so. I have not had any stability issues as of yet (although its been only one night)....I've run 3dmark 2001, 2003, and 2005 all a few times. Scores seem on par for what I should be getting.

Is there something wrong with this card? I've checked the fan on the card, it is running. Is there something other than ATITool I can use for readings? Is this program accurate? My case temps are all in the 40s range. I am running an overclocked Athlon64 3000 which has been rock stable for a few months now. Should I just not worry about it as long as games remain stable? Should I get one of those ATI Silencer 4 gadgets? Should I exchange it? I was hoping to overclock, but I don't think that's wise given my current readings.

I am using the latest drivers off ATI's site. It replaced a GF4-4200 which ran overclocked just fine (no idea at what temps). I used driver cleaner when switching the cards.

Motherboard is an ASUS K8N-E Deluxe. Use an Antec Truepower 380w power supply (has a connector going straight to the vid card).

Thanks for any advice.

I have two guesses at the moment:

1. Bad application of thermal compound between the GPU and the heatsink

2. Faulty heatsink/fan

Note: removing the heatsink to check will void the warranty. I'd contact ATI about this before doing anything.

Another thing I've noticed.

The readings seem to be all over the place. I am watching it go up and down from 58C to 78C over a span of minutes. I am running Everquest 2 (a pretty intensive 3d game) in a window with no real action on screen...character is just standing there in an empty room. I set the fan control in ATITool to Override and Fixed Percentage at 100% but the readings still fluctuate.

Mine got to 74, but it was OCed, it's not too hot. I keep reading that it's spec'ed to run at 100C. With the Arctic Cooler mine is now only getting to 64 under load. Try using ATItool to spin the fan up as the temp increases, the default is only 66%.

Ok, I guess I will just keep an eye on it. I left EQ2 running all night and it didn't explode in flames (or lock up, heh). After my 30 day return period is up I will look into a beefier HSF.

I didn?t think the yellow-goop on my ATI 9600XT was providing that good heat transfer, so I replaced it with AS-ceramique. Runs a little cooler although the card never ran hot anyways.

I would just replace the thermal compound on your X800pro with something better than the stock compound and see how that goes.

A few questions Todd.

1. How do you get ATItool to show the temps? I can't find that anywhere :p.
2. How easy is it to mount an Arctic Cooler. Is that quiet? Right now my video card is the loudest component in my system.

1. I think there is a check box, try some of the sub menues. I didn't do anything special. You can also log the temps, under "misc".

2. The Arctic Cooler took about 5 minutes to put on, mainly trying to decode their poor english and pics that are way to zoomed in. It basically is just a heatsink sandwidch, you need compound on all four RAM chips, both sides and the GPU. They clamp together with thum screws. It is extremly quiet, it's a large 2400RPM fan rather than some small ~5000 RPM fan.

75C is about right for load temps of an X800 Pro when you've got a hot case (40C is pretty dang hot for a case). If you're worried about the temps (or want to o/c as much as possible, or both) then I'd advise getting an ATI silencer 4. It helps a lot!

I tested out my X800 Pro in a P4 2.53 Ghz with a crappy case (poor airflow) and load temps were 71-75C. In my case (A Thermaltake Lanfire with decent cooling) load temps peaked at 68C in ATITool (in games they were usually in the high 50's). This was overclocked at 532 MHZ.

After installing an ATI Silencer 4, the highest temperature the card got to in ATI Tool was 45C (this was at 545 MHZ). In games the card usually tops out at 40-42C. Idle temps are now 35-37C.

1. To set up the temperature settings (as well as all of the other settings), click the "Settings" button in the bottom right hand coner of ATITool. Go to the "Temperature Monitoring" tool and check off "Measure card temperature". I loke to change the update time to every 2 seconds also.

2. It's very easy mounting an ATISilencer. They're whisper quiet, even at full speed (~2200rpm). Way quieter than the stock cooling (which for me wasn't annoying or whiny sounding, but at 100% you could definately hear the whoosh of air in the case. Just make sure you have the proper screwdrivers to remove the ATI fan (it has tiny screws).

If you called ATi, all they will tell you is that if your card is running fine @ all times, then it is perfectly okay w/ that high temp. No company will support ocing your card, so there's no point contacting them about it. If you are worried, just return & exchange for a new one. FYI, my x800 runs about 40 idle and 65 full.

Wow you guys seem to show some really high temps. My GPU via atitemps shows 47 degrees although I admit the case temperature is a nice and cool 32. This is at 500/525 (I know this card has plenty more balls to it but I'm happy with it where it is right now).

*edit * woops I see you guys mean underload. I'm at ~65-70 underload.

Mid 50 Idle and 70-75 under load is OK for a x800 Pro i guess and you have nothing to worry about.

Sure , some people get better temps then that but it all depend on your case/cooling.

I run a 6800 GT in an Antec Sonata case on an A64 3200 + with everything stock (cooling) and i get pretty much the same temps as you.

I can often game up to 5 hours in a row at the most GPU intensive games out there and the card never go above 75 and very rarely reach 70.I never had any stability issues and its been 1 month since i bought the card.

From what i have read on various board , a lot of people get these temps and say that its normal for these cards with stock cooling.Hell , some people even get to 70 Idle and 80-85 underload with absolutely no problems.

Imho , you should only start to worry if you go above 85

Your temps are normal dude , everything is alright

I got an X800 Pro a little while back and love the damn thing. I run the fan at normal and at stock speeds. Ive got ATITool. If I wanted to overclock it, what could I get before it melted?

They do get up to mid 70's under load. Modded to X800XT it's even worse - they get into the mid 80's.

Like I said, with an ATI Silencer 4 I went from 75C load (stock HSF, stock TIM) to 45C load (ATI 4 with Arctic Silver 5). It's very impressive!
