I don't know if anyone will be interested in this with ATI's next gen cards coming within a month or two, but these X800GTO2 cards will apparently be soft moddable into X850 XT. According to the author, the cards will be available soon for around $220.

"The performance increase from stock to modded and overclocked is about 30% in all benchmarks. Final performance is the same as a regular X850 XT PE. Quite impressive for a $220 video card and a 100% mod success rate."
 
Doesnt the x850 require an external power connection? Does this mean that the gto also has one? Because if it doesnt, I dont see how you can unlock the gto and have it run stable. But if it works, it'll be one hell of a mod.
 
'twould be hep to be sure. Let's hope it pans out. But are these samples representative of mass production as opposed to working mock-ups (or even very limited transitional models) utilizing the obviously higher end parts? While Sapphire did use the costlier 256-bit PCB from the 9700 for the initial introduction of the 9500, the VPU's themselves did vary in functional pipelines so would suggest some cost savings to them. If a X800 GTO² is identical to a X850 XT then one would wonder where the cost savings comes from unless ATI is dumping remaining inventory of EOL parts. Just some thoughts 😉

exactly what i'm thinking....there would be absolutely no cost savings if 100% of every card's pipeline works
