But if thats the case why didn't they put DDR in the 800's, which cost less than DDR3 memory? The 800 has DDR3... it makes no since to clock it at 700.. thats not nearly using the DDR3 to its potential.... if you were going to clock it at 700, you would use the cheaper DDR chips like the 6800 does?

There are multiple grades/speeds of GDDR3, as with most RAM. It's probably cheaper to buy slower GDDR3 than to design a new memory controller just so you can save a few bucks on the RAM (assuming that the X800 and X800XL cores are identical except for the different number of pipes).

Either that, or the cards are actually using regular DDR and the specs are wrong.

Ah, see these are the answers im looking for! I didn't know there was different levels of DDR3, and they mem controller idea, based off a standard board makes sense too! You guys are making me think I like it!

I orginally thought the specs were wrong :)

Of course, now that I wrote that, digit-life reviewed the Gigabyte X800 and found that a) it uses 2.0ns GDDR3 (ie, rated for 500Mhz), and b) theirs came stock at 400/500(!). YMMV.

Apparently there were plans for a 128MB variant of the X800 using DDR1, but that may not happen? Very little solid info on different models of this card.

2.0ns GDDR3, 400/500..........that would be a steal for under 2 bills. The current product line is quite confusing though. And Asus usually further confuses with non standard/ref cards.

Not sure if someone mentioned this, but the 6800NU uses DDR 1 memory. That's why it's clocked so low, but being 256-bit it really isn't that slow.

That's the main reason I didn't settle for a 6600GT

128-bit memory - The freaking 9700/9800s had 256-bit .

It would be nice if the x800 128mb card could unlock the 4 additional pipes like the 6800 nu. Hopefully it can be done.

Looks promising. Not sure if it can step up to the 6800NU or not. Value-wise, indefinitely. Cheapest NV41 6800NU I've seen is $289. Still a little expensive. I paid $340 for mine, though. The DDR memory on my card overclocks from 625 MHz stock to 850 MHz. I wish nVidia would ship this chip at higher stock memory clocks to be more competitive, because it definitely has a lot of headroom, as seen below. These settings have been stable enough for me to 3DMark. Screenshot here after test of changes. The "detect optimal frequencies" result turned up just short of this overclock.

I don't run this daily just in case it's too much for my card. Normally I still run at default for safety.

Does the X800 use the same chipset as the X800 XT? (Is it unlockable?)

Only with the 6800NU AGP version. The NV41 (PCI-E) is natively a 12 pixel-pipeline chip.

Wow those look great for the person on a budget. It seems to me they are a little bit late to the show though.

But better late than never I guess.

I wonder how moddable these will be?
