X700Pro or 6600GT?

Howdy Folks,

I am putting a system together using the EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra and was trying to decide whether to get this:
ABIT RX700pro Radeon X700PRO 128MB ($125)
or this:
XFX PVTGeforce 6600GT 128MB ($145)

Any thoughts? The $20 is not that big of a deal, system stability and reliability is. I will be using this mainly for web & e-mail, photoshop, dreamweaver & Ultima Online.

Thanks!

Why not go for a 6800nu? It's a bit more but a huge improvement over the 6600GT even and the price isn't a whole lot more than the 6600GT.

this x700pro is cheaper-109

basically the 6600gt is about 10-20% depending on the game faster than x700pro, at 110 vs 145 their comparable price/performance, there are also x800's in the 150 range, these cards (since they are 12 pipes vs 8) are significantly faster than the 6600gt

I couldn't find the 6800nu on the egg - is it new?

I did narrow it down to these three 6600GT's - of the XFX, Gigabyte and eVGA which do you all prefer? Only difference I could see is the eVGA has 2.0 OpenGL, the other two have 1.5 (no idea what that is ...)

Haha, nice. The "nu" designation means "non ultra" or as some say, vanilla. Basically, the bare 6800, no extra "trims" or editions. The 6800 works off the NV40 core just like the GT version, has the same 256 mbit ram interface, except that the total ram size is reduced to 128 megs (unless you get asus's wacky version, but with that much money you could afford a fully blown GT anyway) and they disable one quad unit (4 pipes) and one vertex shader. Good news is that both of those can be unlocked, and the chances you have on the AGP version is pretty high, PCI-E, unlocking wont work.

Try here.

Also, what you said about the OpenGL is BS, they all have the same core design, the marketing team or newegg must have screwed up. OpenGL is a graphics API, like directX. No need to use that as a factor for your final decision, it's the same for all three models. (And everything in the 6-series lineup actually, API wise.)

Unfortunately the least expensive PCIe 6800 is twice what I had in mind to spend - since I won't really be doing anything more intense than Ultima Online will I even notice the difference?

You want reliability right? then DO NOT GET XFX!!! Get EVGA or BFG or Leadtek, but NOT XFX!!! I owned both the x700pro and the 6600GT for a time, my computer couldn't power the x700pro for long periods of time so I got a 6600GT instead. The 6600GT is considerably faster than the x700pro IMO. Also, you can get 8xS AA on the 6600GT, the x700pro maxes out at 6x AA. The 6600GT has support for SM 3.0, and HDR. So IMO, it's a cear choice, 6600GT!! Link. This is an EVGA, one of the best brands out there. Buy this.

EDIT: OOPS! That's an AGP 8x version, let me find a PCI Express version

EDIT 2: here

Bro, go in for X800 quite nice and is somewhat similar in speed with 6600 GT... I agree 6800nu will cost but will also dilever bye the way you can also try to stick with 6800 LE { limited edition } Four years ago i had FX5700 Le it was a very good card.... SO, EITHER X800 or 6800 LE { limited edition }

Connect3D $99 US but you need to replace the heatsink

Me, I'd put the order like X700 Pro (or 9800 Pro), 6600 GT, 6800 and 6800 GT then 7800 GT.

Above the X700 Pro or 9800 Pro, I wouldn't go for the ATI since the equal performing video cards are more expensive than the Nvidia. I'd only get a X700 Pro or 9800 Pro to save money.
Since you have higher prices in Canada for the 6600 GT, I ordered a X700 Pro and an Arctic Cooling Silencer 1 Rev.2 to put on it.

I keep hearing horror stories re: MSI's customer support and RMA process - does this apply to the Video Cards as well or just the motherboards?

I havent dealt with MSI at all, so I wouldnt know, I only remember hearing XFX horror stories. But I have a sapphire x800, and it works great, but I got mine when they had the rebates for it, and the MSI cooler looks beefier than the sapphire one.

I have the MSI 6600GT and it's a great card. It comes with VIVO and a large software package. However if you don't need that it's not worth spending the extra money on it.

If "System stability & reliability are a prime concern" I would go with the eVGA 6600GT. The NVIDIA drivers tend to be more stable than the ATI drivers and eVGA makes pretty good cards overall and their service is pretty good.

For stability stick with Nvidia. Not saying ATI cards aren't good cards, they are, but I have never experienced any compatibility issues with Nvidia.
