there pretty much equal, the x700 pro has newer technology but the 9800pro has 256 bit interface

Actually the 9800pro is still faster, but I think the x700 is only pci-e, so if you're considering one, chances are you cant be using the other (unless your board supports agp and pci-e).

I think the X700 Pro might be the 9800 Pro version in PCI-E.
The X700 Pro may have Vivo but not Avivo (ATI's version of Purevideo that doesn't quite match up to it but may with driver revisions). And it's Shader Model 2 (not 3).

If you absolutely want ATI, I'd wait until November or December for the X1600. The 6600 GT has Purevideo and Shader Model 3.

I know I have an X700 Pro but that was to save money. I want a Geforce 8 or equivalent when UT2007 comes out.

i think the x700 has a slight edge (not worth upgrading). the 6800nu is a worthwhile upgrade though.

oh i forgot to specify, i dont need a good gaming card or anything. in fact i have the x700 already in my hands and a 7800gtx in my gaming rig

i like ati's software vs the 7800gtx's vivo software...so the x700 will primarily be for my downloading rig to be able to capture video from my vcr...allowing me to use ati's MMC once again

this thread is purely out of curiosity as to which was faster and by how much

looks like u guys all think their pretty much the same then i guess...

Both have the same number of pipelines, but the X700P's core is clocked slightly higher. The 9800P has double the memory bus width, while the X700P has slightly faster memory. It'd be pretty close, with the 9800P maybe winning AA+AF benchmarks by a bit, but I'd recommend the X700 for its lower power draw and SM2b capabilities.

There're a ton of X700P PCIe vs. 9800P AGP benchmarks here, but the two cards use different platforms and CPUs, so just use this as a very general guide.

There's a recent article here that compares a mere X700 AGP to a 9800P on the same system, and the X700 comes out looking pretty good. Most games tested are pretty old, but I'd recommend a X700P based on these benchmarks. More reviews of another X700 AGP listed here. You can check if any include a 9800P for comparison. That HIS X700 looks interesting for its Silencer cooler.

But $200 for a X700P seems like way too much, especially if you won't game with it. The 256MB is probably worthless outside of gaming, too. Look for a cheaper card, maybe a 128MB non-Pro.

If you already have it and are happy with it, then stick with it, as it compares pretty well with a 9800P and should draw less power at the desktop. But I'd almost recommend spending, say, an extra ~$30 for this X800, which should be much faster than the X700P with games (same core and mem clocks, but 12 pipes and a 256bit memory bus). Sure, you may not use it, but it'll have a higher resale value when you want to upgrade down the road. No idea if power draw increases, though it's easy enough to find a PCIe X800 review to compare power draw with a X700P (I'd try TechReport's).

Edit: Actually, forget that Abit. Look for the $240 Asus at NewEgg. It's clocked far higher (475/900 vs. 392/700), uses better components (nicer capacitors and a bigger HSF), has that internal VIVO connector as a bonus, and is a shorter card. All that for $10 more than the Abit. Still pricey for VIVO work, but a far better value than that C3D X700P.

Are you guys comparing the X700P to the 9800P 128 mb or 256 mb version? I have the 9800 Pro 128 mb version.

The X700P comes in both AGP and PCIe btw.

Best Buy has the X700P (either the AGP or PCIe) for $99.99 after rebate. I haven't built a PCIe system yet, but I was thinking about buying the PCIe card to have for when I do in a couple of months. Or.. Should I just wait until I build the system before I buy the card? The XP700P PCIe might be around $100 by the time I build the system.

Or.. I could always use the X700P AGP in another syster and upgrade the card.

What would you do?
