X700pro/xt was all failed cards, unless your talknig about those cheap X700np.
6800 is the way to go. Or even a 6600GT.

Its funny though, because the x700 series was dismissed as inferior to the 6600gt's, they dropped to a WAY better bang for buck value, considering the real world difference is pretty slim.

Edit: to answer your question, Ive been playing HL2 and other newish games on my x700pro 256mb that I got over a year ago for 150, havent played quake 4 or fear yet, but it has treated me very well.

The 6800nu would be quite a bit better and worth the extra money easily. Extra performance is needed in future games tbh, so would be worth it...

Only the XT was a failed card, the pro's have been quite successful in their segment - not challengers to a 6600GT though, but because they command a lower price anyway, it ofsets the difference in performance.

the X700 series is an 8 pipeline, 128 bit memory interface card..
I would think it would be no comparison to a 6800NU..

Now, on the other hand, the X700 series has a great price right now.. since ATI has revamped their mid range product line with X800 series releases (basically to get rid of last technologies cores)

I previously had an X700PRO... gaming was good on it at 1024x768 with medium and high eye candy turned on in most games... but above that resolution, and it began to show that it just didn't quite have the stuff to keep up

Also there are new 256MB 6660 cards using DDR2 instead of DDR1, I hear those clock higher than 6600GT's :Q
