either os is not going to do much for you. they'll be a whole new set of headaches to work out. simply stick with xp, it has a lot of life left to it.

x64 Vista is the future, but right now 64bit XP is not worth the hassel. In a year or two once 4GB of ram and more becomes standard, and once more drivers are out for x64 Vista I think then it will be worth adopting. But right now stick with 32bit XP and wait for 32bit Vista.

I'd say wait until Vista. Win64 is nice and solid, but, has a lot of driver issues still. It's been out for while (8 to 10 months?) and I still have no support for several of my basic devices. My hp 1012 laser for example. Given that going Win64 really wouldn't give you any benefit over XP home (other than networking stuff that XP pro gives) I would wait for Vista.

Vista should give solid driver support, nifty eye candy, real security and 64bit goodness.

Why do you want to replace XP right now? 64 would be a waste of money... and well, Vista isn't due out for several more months, so you don't really have a choice... although i definitely plan on upgrading when it's out.

Well xp64 has gotten alot better, there driver support is larger then what it was and more and more software is being written for it, like zonealarm finally has a beta version of its firewall for it. That said I tried and and still went back to xp because there was still software and games that didnt quite work right. Im done with xp64, ill wait for vista to go 64bit.

If you have to pay retail or near-retail price for x64, I'd say don't waste your money at all. Luckily I was able to get it extremely cheaply through my university, but even then I hardly use it...it's useless to me as a day-to-day OS since drivers for my HDTV tuner do not exist for x64 (and possibly may never). Even if you have hardware that is well supported, I don't think it's worth the money - you might notice minor performance gains in some situations, but nothing earth shattering unless you need to use tons of RAM.

You could always play with the trial as mentioned above and make your decision then, but as I said - if you're going to have to pay a lot for it (I have no idea what price x64 goes for at retail), don't bother.

Oh, and if you do play with the trial, don't install it to the same partition as your regular XP install, even if you use a different folder...I learned that one the hard way :p

You won't see any real benefit in moving to x64 XP. There may be the drivers for the hardware in your box if you are lucky.... but there is still virtually no 64 bit apps / games.

Stick with XP, when Vista comes out it may be worth the swap but only if app/game companies actually start releaseing 64 bit software.
