I have just build my brand new computer, with :
* sapphire 4870x2
* i7 920, stock fan
* gigabyte x58-ds4
* 3*2go ocz 1333 cas 7
* corsair 620W dunnowhat (the expensive one)
* windows xp 64

I did install all the latest drivers for the hardware / os. I get hard reboots when :
* i try do to something while my startup things are still loading
* i run steam (just after it logs into my account)
I only try to play oblivion and BF2, BF2 works fine, oblivion does not at all

I disabled all the auto-overclocking features of the MB, everything else is set to default, and I don't know where this comes from. It might be :
* xp64 is used by nobody, and thus it should be no surprise it doesn't work
* there were mentions of x58 and 4870 compatibility problems in an article
* faulty hardware or bad construction of the computer

Am I the only one ? a quick search in the forums did not reveal any related problem.

have you been able to try another OS?...XP64 is pretty nasty, especially when it comes to using crossfire.

Well, I intend on doing this only as last ressort. This is a gaming PC, so this is likely to mean I'll have to go Vista, and I spent enough already on the hardware ...

Grab Windows 7 64 bit beta until august. It works and will probably get you through...

Why would he want to be a beta tester? Windows 7 is far from a finished product and it can bring a lot of troubles on his platform.

OP, grab Vista x64. Like Stumps said, XP64 bit is pretty crappy.

Probably because it's free rather than having him go out and pay for a new OS that may not fix his problem.

OP try the beta, it's actually a pretty decent product from most accounts (have not tried it myself yet) and if it does not help/work, just reinstall your old OS or get Vista.

That was my intent, it was free and can't hurt other than the time spent doing it. Why not be a beta tester? It may help down others down the road especially with those components.

The Windows 7 beta is pretty solid by all accounts.

I tried XP 64 on my wife's machine, and I ended up purchasing the system builder's version of vista home premium x64 and it's run rock solid. It also has DirectX 10, if you are in to gaming.

Like other posters, I'd grab that beta is Windows 7 and run with that for a while. I hear that if you purchase Vista after July 1st then you get a free upgrade to Windows 7, but that's hearsay at this point.

XP 64 has worked fine for me, but my hardware is not nearly as upto date. Check for Latest Drivers for everything and/or Hardware issues.

whats wrong with vista?

I've been running it for nearly 2 years now and I've had nowhere near the amount of issues that I had when I migrated to XP back in late 2001.

But maybe canard should have given Win7 a bit more of ago, I've been using it for about a week now and it's bloody fantastic...even when I compare it to Vista x64 which is bloody good.

good to here that things got sorted for the OP :)

Well I'm not going to be reinstalling everything again in august, so that's why I opted for Vista.
