X570 motherboards

Don't know. Other than ECC, it looks like 32GB has only been available for desktop for about a year. I see Gskill Trident Z RGB DC for ASUS Z390 only (3000/3200) and Corsair Vengeance LPX (2666) that says latest Intel motherboards.

Point is there is no possible way to get 128GB of memory in there that is supported or certified to work, only thing that is needed is luck. May as well say it supports 960GB or 1,000,000GB.

But you still don't get it.

There's "by the spec" support (chipset, etc., spec sheets), and "tested and working" support (QVL). The two are similar and related, but not the same.

The chipset and BIOS, can "support" 128GB of RAM, even if there's no tested configuration "supporting" that config. Do you get it? This is how the computer industry operates. They market on (theoretical) specifications.

(It's basically saying, "the math and logic behind this circuitry, and physics, say that this should be a working valid config. But we have yet to actually built a working valid config to those specifications that has been tested and certified working.)

It just means MSI hasn't updated their QVL to include 32GB DIMMs. That's it. The board only determines how many DIMM slots there are (4) and what trace topology is used to connect them to the CPU socket (MSI should be all daisy chain on x570). CPU IMC will determine which DIMM sizes/densities are supported.

Summit Ridge and Pinnacle Ridge didn't really support 32GB DIMMs. Or if they did, they only supported two of them at a time. Matisse supports up to four 32GB DIMMs.

It's not deceptive at all, it just means it hasn't been tested. You can wait until they do, but it could be awhile. 🙂

My complaint isn't memory though, it's the price of motherboards. I was all set to order the X570 AORUS XTREME, until I saw the price Newegg wants for it. WTF!!! $700!!! Is this what things on the AMD side have come to?
Thats $200 more than the CPU, the 3900x I wanted to get!!! That's just crazy!!! I have no idea what to do now....

The Xtreme is nice, but it doesn't have much over the Master except 10 gig Ethernet and that passive chipset "heatsink". I own a Master and can tell you that if you have decent case airflow, you can run the fan at low speeds or maybe even turn it off without trouble. Especially if you are not using a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD (which I am not).

The Master is already major overkill for the 3900x.

I was hoping that I could get a board with the 10 gig Ethernet, as I was planning on upgrading my network after I move. It looks like I may have to put that off though.
 
Hint: I've got some Asus 10GbE-T NICs in my FS thread.

Was going to upgrade my workstations, but then I snagged a couple of 8-port 2.5GbE-T D-Link switches at Amazon for ~$135 ea., so I then bought a pair of 2.5GbE-T IOCrest NICs, from Walmart.com of all places, for ~$25 ea.
 
Stupid question but what's the point of 10gb ethernet (for home use)? You will need a nvme ssd on both ends to come even close to the offered bandwidth meaning you will need to use ssds for large file (media) storage. hdds usually can't even saturate 1gbit.

Or... a RAID-5/6 array of modern HDDs, on say, a NAS, and a client PC with an NVMe primary OS SSD. 500MB/sec+ should easily be possible.

D-Link DMS-1100-10TS

There's one on ebay for $230 + $70 shipping, I think it was.

I got mine at Amazon.com, it was ~$135. (Pricing bot, no-one bought or reviewed or even seemingly noticed them, so the bot kept lowering the price, down down it went, until I bought a few of them, then the price shot back up to $497.)

The competing TrendNet equivalent, is $330 from Beach Camera on Amazon, so the D-Link shouldn't sell for any more than that. Both of them have dual 10GbE SFP+ ports for uplink. You can get copper 10G SFP+ "tranceivers" for $43-$70.

Part of the problem is, these 2.5GbE-T switches, are designed for "802.11ac Wave 2" Access Points, that can utilize more than 1Gbit/sec of wireless bandwidth per AP, so these are considered "business-grade", and not a consumer-oriented 2.5GbE-T switch. They do have a fan, and an IEC AC power cord like a PC. They are also considerably larger than your average 8-port consumer GigE switch.

Thanks, for the info. At $135 I'd give it a try but $239 for 2.5G plus transceivers for the 10G sfp ports is meh. Starts getting into the realm of the $500-600 Buffalo or Netgear rj45 10G stuff.

4x32GB. Just because something isn't on the QVL doesn't mean it doesn't work. I bet the RAM you are using right now isn't even on the QVL for your mobo.

In any case, 32GB DIMMs work fine, I am using them in my system. I will grab another pair at some point to move to 128GB.

My current ram is absolutely 100% on the QVL list of my motherboard
