Question x570 boards for zen 1

Currently i'm OC'ing my Ryzen 7 1700 and im really limited by my motherboard, i've seen some x570 boards taht run with zen 1, is there a way to find out wether the board supports zen 1? because the support is basically unofficial and only possible becuase the motherboards had some memory left over, im especially thinking about getting the x570 Aorus master, so if anyone knows about the unofficial zen 1 support on that one it'd be great.

yea, after a bit of googling i also came to that result (technically this is just the load line itself, which exists, because vdroop would make it run above the spec voltage, even if just for the brink of a second), sadly, i dont have a 12nm chip tho, im not aware of any 1000 series chips taht even can be 12nm, except for the 1600af and some 1200.

Yeah I hadn't heard of any 1700's on 12nm either but was still a bit thrown by the fact you managed to post and boot 4.1 at 1.35v. Sounds like you have a pretty good chip. I actually don't think it's the worst idea in the world to upgrade the mobo first as long as you plan to do the CPU in the near future. That being said its hard to deny that for aourus master money you could buy a 5800x and throw it in your b450 (assuming a compatible bios is available) and completly destroy your 1700 in performance. Even a 3600 is faster at both single and multi-thread in most workloads.

I'd use hwinfo64 over hwmonitor. The later kind of sucks in comparison to the former.

While there is obviously some overlap, HWI64 reads from more sensors than HWmonitor. If there is a sensor in a piece of hardware in your system HWI64 is very likely going to see it. It also gives you much more detailed information like effective clock, per core power usage etc. It's GUI is completely customizable, it has lots of configuration options, and also receives updates much more frequently. HWmonitor is fine as a basic utility. HWI64 does everything HWmonitor does and a lot more. IMO it's just a better application.

i used mc extractor on the b550 aorus pro bios, which is a lot cheaper, theoretically it has microcode for zen 1 chips, so i might try, if it boots on it, its however also not officially supported, i can just send it back if it doesnt work tho

also: it seems prices are a lot different in our regioans, here a 5800x costs 400+ and the aorus master is currently sitting at 300, but i get the point

You do you. But you already said this is for crapping around and you are not using it at the OC setting. So you are talking about buying a board not because its the best board for the money now, but to OC this 1700 you aren't going to be using at speed. Better to wait till you are ready to upgrade and again you can get a 3700x or 5600 for the price, use that now and then can get a better OC board later when you were ready. The fact you have a board that can run a 3600/3700/5600 and get waaaaaaaaaaaaaay more performance for the same cost, still seemingly makes it more pointless. If you are going to be using the 1700 for a while. Then do so. Then get a new board and CPU at the same time when you are ready for the upgrade. Again this is more my opinion. You do what you feel is best for you. Just doesn't seem right not to give you the information that would save money and give you a better experience.

What kind of stability testing did you and your friend do? Posting and booting into the OS is one thing but passing a suite of memory tests is going to be a lot harder at those speeds/timings on a Zen 1 CPU. I personally don't consider a memory overclock stable unless it passes memtest86, A long term DRAM calculator stress test, and a long term Large FFT p95 test.

Later production silicon and newer BIOS versions probably help getting better memory speeds/timings so I guess it's possible things have improved in the 2 years since I've played with these chips. Not to mention silicon lottery and mobo memory topology/trace layout are pretty major variables. I still think getting anything 24/7 stable above 3200 with good timings is atypical on these CPU's. Early on many people were struggling to even reach 3200.

I'm not sure if you are still disputing my CPU clock/voltage observations but FYI they are completely in line with Silicon Lottery's historical binning statistics.

the timings are very loose tho(back then i also only had stock cooler, before i got a better one cpu temps obviously were my main problem).

I get that. Maybe its from when the time I came from. You aren't pumping L2 over it so you aren't getting records. You think and maybe to like 100mhz maybe the VRM's are playing a part. I seriously doubt it though. Maybe the VRM's are at their limit, but you have already surpassed like all but 10% of the 1700 silicon. I seriously doubt you can push it harder and with more vcore the more likely even limited runs with do permanent damage to your core (imagine one benchmark and you won't even get your current clock at the current voltage).

Back in day you used to be able to nearly double performance overclocking. You could get signifacantly lower cost CPU's and run them at perf levels of some of the top chips. So it was important to get your CPU at its best stable clock and you would run it that way till the system died or new CPU's came out (and man were upgrades so important at this time).

You act like you aren't going to swap out the CPU but you want to push it that much harder and take the chance of killing it and getting a new board to do so, not because its the best board but for OCing a chip you are about to kill.

If you have the expendable income and getting that 4.2 just to say you can is worth it. That's cool its your hobby. Just nothing I am ever going to understand.

Since the CPU situation is so messed up right now, I have bought a 3300X from South Korea.

A 1600AF is just a rip off for $150, a 3300X is $200 and a 3600 is $230+ and I feel like a 3100 is a waste of money.

Used eBay prices are a joke also, and a dang 3500 is almost the cost of a 3600, ugh.

The 3300X from half way around the world was $157 after tax

I recently ended up buying a 3600 used for a reasonable price. AMD has bad value for low end stuff and even their midrange isn't great pricewise these days. I would probably have gone intel but I already had a board. The dumb part was I had a 1600AF I bought for $95 from Amazon last summer returned it. It was a meh deal at the time but then the AF train dried up.

That's sad. I remember last year building a rig for a friend, I think I got the 1600AF for around $80 with a cooler and a used RX580 8GB on ebay for $90. The entire rig with motherboard, cpu, ram, gpu, case, power supply, ssd was under $500. Now, the gpu itself is going for around that much itself on ebay.
