I have a X5675 with 1.25V setting, 1600 memory @ 1600. I hit 90d Celsius @ 4.0 ghz when I'm encoding for more than a few minutes at a time. How worried should I be about this heat? Should I lower bclk, voltage, ghz, or ??

I'm at 200 blck, 20x multi, and it's stable --- just really, really hot.

Get a better cooling solution for that chip. That's too hot

Do these xeons generally OC better than a 980X? I got a 980X, ES though, launch silicon pretty much,

Yes, especially if the ES you have is A0 stepping.
Is it a Q3VG sSpec? That is the one with A0 stepping.
The Xeon EP series up to the X5675 are 95 watt or less, and in my testing, clock higher with less heat.

The X5650 overclocks well, but it only has a 23X max turbo (1 core) & 22X multiple cores. You can run 200+ bclk easy, but getting that kind of bclk with an X5670 or higher is harder to do. With the higher multi and much faster bclk, temps quickly become a problem.. The silicon lottery does have a lot to do with it, but so does RAM & the motherboard..

How about the e5645 & e5649?

Yeah, the E5649 is the better deal then. My Asus SaberTooth will lock in 21X multiplier on that CPU for an easy 4.2Ghz.

I have a Qual sample I believe, should be B1 iirc

B1 stepping should be fine Shmee. Just realize it's a 130 watt Gulftown and heat becomes a problem really quick. Max Tcase temp on the Gulftown is 68C, whereas most Westmere EP Xeons are 81C. This is the main difference when overclocking.

Was the x5650 stable at 1.416v 5ghz? That seems insane.

No, was just pushing the CPU to see what I could get out of it. It was stable at 4.7Ghz tho. Asus SaberTooth has adaptive voltage, so it responds as needed to turbo & load. That X5650 was a good chip tho, wish I hadn't sold it.
