X38 Release Information

Hi,

Intel had to respin the X38 due to compatibility issues with a few PCIe 2.0 cards and some other items of interest. The latest chipsets have been delivered to the manufacturers and most are in full production at this point. A few of the boards required component changes so those designs are being retested at this point. It appears now that retail boards will probably show up by the 9/24 release date although it is looking more and more like supply and additional designs will not be in plentiful supply until October.

Also, early tests on final silicon indicate that the chipset performs better with DDR3 than DDR2 on like boards, hint DDR2-1066 at 4-4-4-12 and DDR3-1066 5-5-4-12 perform within a percent of each other on this chipset which is something we could not say on the P35. We are running overclocked benchmarks at this time and seeing DDR3 showing significant gains over DDR2 up top with the X38, however, still waiting on final BIOS releases so it could change. I say this, as the last BIOS spin for the DDR3 boards improved performance up to 9% in several benchmarks but we have not received updated DDR2 code in over a week.

For those interested in CrossFire performance, not seeing a real significant increase in performance yet when compared to the 975X, once again this could change, or more likely the HD 2900XT cards are just not pushing enough data yet to matter (at least with current games and the wonderful world of Vista). I will have initial CF results up in a couple of days.

Thanks for the update!

So the real plus of the chipset will be DDR3 performance, not much of a reason to upgrade from the ?35 for msot people.

Have you done any overclocking tests yet to see if the chipset overclocks yields better results than P35 boards?

Probably need to spend a lot more $ to fully realize the potential of X38. +9% with some benchies will probably translate to +4 to 5% real-world gain. A good part of this boost may come from UBER EXPENSIVE DDR3 RAMs. I doubt that SLI will be supported by X38 or any Intel chipset in 07 or 08.

P35/45nm CPU may still be the preferred choice for many price-conscious overclockers.

Based on GK's post, I think X38 may improve core speed by 20 to 50MHz over P35. I suspect that X38 will be a very hot running chip. In the end, both cancel each other out.

I'm definitely not going to touch X38. Waiting for the early adopters to work out the bugs. Perhaps X48 next year.

I'm not very familiar with respins, but is this a bad initial sign?

Planning on a brand new build, and I do like to go with the latest and greatest, so was planning and waiting on X38/X48 (probably the ASUS, Gigabyte, or Intel offering) for just a bit more futureproofing. Now I'm getting nervous but still looking forward to the initial reviews.

Reworking the chipset so close to the release date is never a good thing. There are no perfect chip. Unfortunately, X38 may come with a lot of band-aids.

Glad to see your starting to see the improvements with this chipset I have seen Gary. Was yours tested on Penryn like the one I seen or QC2D?

When Final retail penryn stepping are shown I expect to see 20% improvements over C2D with X38-X48 chipsets. Gary can you say what process that silcon was on in the chipset as I don't know that. So penryn on X38-X48 = K10 over K8 results . The more things change the more they remain the same:moon:

Wow 20 % is better then I thought. Obviously thats with DDR3, anyway can you give a rough estimate on the difference in performance difference between an x38/penryn/DDR3 and a x38/penryn/DDR2. I know its probably tough especially since the final bios arnt out yet but an educated guess would be fine.

I saw that Vista home premium was used for the test. I've also read where XP didn't work with some X35 chips...

So.. will XP work with the X38's or not?

I sure don't want to go to Vista..

Also; what about Linux.. yeah yeah yeah... I know.. really early in the cycle.
