I have a P4 3.2, X800XL and I can't run BioShock because I don't have shader 3, Crysis is coming out soon and my budget is not that tight but I don't want to buy expendable products.

I am eager to see how X38 overclocks with quad core. If the differences aren't large I am getting a mid range P35 mobo. I use a single overclocked 8800GTX and am not interested in SLi or Crossfire.

Heck I may do P35 anyway because all I need is on the order of 463 x 8 to hit 3.7GHz.

I'm on the same boat ChandiInstinct and going to wait until November for X38 and 8900,
i don't know about CPU (Q or 6850 ?) but right now don't know what to do, have 9800PRO
and was going to buy X1950PRO AGP(512-256mb ???) until it.
Should i waste another ~$200 for AGP card if i will buy next generation PC?

The steady march of GPU technology continues, as details about NVIDIA's next flagship card are surfacing. While most of the information available right now is based on rumor, what is known for certain is that the next King GPU is codenamed the G92 -- and it's going to be blazingly fast.

Here are some of the rumors floating about the Internets:

it'll offer around 1 TERRAFLOP of computational performance
the clock speed is going to be somewhere between the 800 and 850 MHZ mark
sticking with the nomenclature of the current generation, there'll be a 9800 GTS and GTX
it'll be the first PCI Express 2.0 card
looks like it'll also support a new DirectX 10.1 standard, and Open GL 3.0
it'll have a DisplayPort connector (the new digital display interface standard)
be built with a 65 nm fabrication process
double precision support (floating-point 64)
an GTX2 version might come very soon after launch (2 GPUS on one card, like a 7950 GX2)
could be almost as twice as fast as a 8800 Ultra (as crazy as that may sound)
might sport a gigabyte of GDDR4 memory
Keep in mind these are all rumors.

As for NVIDIA's mid-range card, it is codenamed the G98. Not much is known about it, other than it won't sport a 128-bit controller, like the somewhat underwhelming 8600 GT/GTS cards. And it also appears that NVIDIA is sticking with the plan of releasing the high-end G92 GPU in Q4 ? quite possibly November ? and then releasing mid-range and low-end cards in the spring.

They will likely release it in November or so, but I doubt you will be able to purchase one at anything near MSRP until after the holiday season.

I am just going off information provided by the video card suppliers who were told not to expect a launch until Q1 or so. NVIDIA might do a preemptive technology launch to show off the new chipset, they might even do a limited launch at the ultra-high end for marketing purposes (tape-out is very close by the way), but right now the majority of the video card suppliers are not expecting to launch full scale production until Q1 or so. Hopefully, NV will have the Vista drivers for the current 8xxx series in decent shape by then and maybe even some decent platform drivers. 😉

In regards to X38, we expect Santa Claus to visit us soon. 😀

When it comes to stock performance, the X38 and P35 are basically the same, or at least the P35 is within a couple of percent on current pre-release samples. Intel designed the X38 for overclocking, improved CPU throughput/performance with the Penryns, efficient bus transfers, multi-GPU enhancements, and DDR3-2000+ performance along with a few other items we will discuss shortly. Once the manufacturers have some time tuning the chipset, expect to see its performance when overclocked to exceed that of the P35 by some meaningful and measurable differences. DDR2 performance is really the area where the board suppliers have been spending a lot of time tuning and testing to bring it up to the speed of the P35 boards. We should know how successful they are shortly.

I'd say IP35 regular is a better deal: IIRC Mwave has a nice rebate on it so it comes down to $90-100 AR and has a MUCH BETTER cooling - IP35-E is really barefoot board, with very minimal cooling and features.

It doesn't seem utterly unfeasible. I mean, the MSI board has two x16 slots and two x4 slots for a total of 40 lanes. That's more than enough to offer four x8 slots with some left over.

They'd have to be single-slot cards, but there's a suggestion that RV670 may be single-slot.

I wonder if Asus could do something like the P35 Blitz boards with two of their Crosslinx chips.....

its only good to 440 or so (on quads), the abit is faster and cheaper.

I'm still confused as to why the imminent release of the X38 is drawing so much speculation when the ASUS Blitz series of M/B's has yet to hit the mainland. Especially, given how highly touted they have been in the reviews I've read, to date. It would seem odd, perhaps only to me, that an ASUS X38 would hit our shores before any of the Blitz boards.

Perhaps the Grand Guru of Gary and his "FHWMNBN", could shed some light on this, for if the trend holds true, all you guys lining your duckets up for the big purchase won't have any thing to blow it on until... um...say Christmas. I'm still waiting for the elusive Blitz Formula. And not so patiently.

I doubt that the real-world performance between X38 and P35 would amount to more than a few %.

I'm quite sure it will be more than that - for example it's more than likely you can finally use two or more full-blown x16 cards in SLI, let alone the PCIE2.0 support which will come handy from 2008. You seem to forget nothing is about CPU OC only but other things as well.

If someone in dire need of a CHEAP mainboard NOW then I agree, probably things won't change for another 2 months at least for him.
However anybody else like someone is about to buy a decent mainstream OC board like I am then I think it makes no sense not to wait another 2-3 weeeks and see how things shake out. Hell if nothing but P35 prices will go down anyway including top boards... for future-proof board X38 will make a lot more sense too.

Secon question: Does anyone have some additional information about a DDR2/DDR3 X38 combo board from GigaByte and Asus? I know that MSI (X38 Diamond) and Foxconn (X38A) will release such combo boards but I haven't heard anything about the Asus and GigaByte in this direction.
