X3 -710 vcore locked?

Hey all,

I'm excited about upgrading to a X3-710, choosing that over the 720 cause its cheaper and has a 13x multiplier, which would require a 284 fsb to reach 3.7ghz. Any mobo can handle that no probs, so i'll put the $30 price difference (where i live its $30) towards a new vid card.

However, someone stated that not only is the multiplier locked, but vcore is also locked, so im stuck w/ using stock voltages. I've only heard it from one source, & googled it but didnt find any info. Can someone w/ a x3-710 please confirm if this is true? If so, it would severly hamper any overclocking options.

Not true, sorry. There are samples of 710's not being able to hit 3.7 Ghz, and there's no guarantee that a mobo can hit 284 fsb. In fact, some mobos crap out after 250 or so.

Vcore is most definitely not locked - I'm using a 710 and currently have my Vcore +.10.

And FG also has the 4th core unlocked.

Try to change your voltage VIA AMD OverDrive.

im pretty sure the Biostar 790GX model can handle 284 fsb. crapping out before 250 is abysmal, i've never heard of that w/ any of the C2D mobo chipsets, or S939 mobos. even the 750i which is not the greatest chipset can handle 400+fsb. I imagine the 790GX can handle that too, but im still doing research since before the x3 phenom2s i was researching all intel since that was gonna be my upgrade route. Cheers though.

Yeah, the Biostar 790GX should be able to do it - I've had mine @ 254 (stopped due to CPU heat) and I know others have hit over 500 fsb. Some S939 motherboards (ECS comes to mind) had issues with going over 250.

I always cringe, though, when people assume (or guarantee) something performing beyond stock. I guess I've seen too many of those "why won't my xxxx CPU overclock to xxxx Mhz" threads. As an example, I highly doubt my X3 710 would hit 3.7 Ghz, stable. It already requires 1.425 Vcore to get to 3.3, although as Blackpanther26 points out I have the 4th core unlocked.

I put heatsinks on my Biostar 790GX's mosfets, as they get really hot. I had some leftovers from a Zalman VF900 and they worked great.
