Does anyone here know whether or not the X2900 heatsink mounting design is the same as the previous X1950 series?

You're looking to put an aftermarket cooler that you had on a X1950 onto a 2900XT aren't you.??

I don't think they are the same animals. Especially due to the 512MB bus. The RAM chips may be oriented differently. Maybe someone will chime in that knows for sure.

They are definitely different. Even the cores are not aligned with each other. Look at the core in relation to the PCI-e pins. The R600 core is further forward towards the front of the card than it is on the R580. And the memory chips are oriented differently as well as you can easily see.

They are different. I saw one before my eyes at my local store, and I can tell they are different. And Zalman, for example, will release their newest VGA cooler, the VF-1000, which was made specifically to be compatible with R600 and G80.

The memory chips orientation and the GPU location do not have a direct correlation with how the HS will mount on to the GPU itself. The memory is almost always cooled via a set of BGA sinks.

If the Mounting holes are the same for the heatsink, then the GPU will be cooled regardless.

Thermalright has made compatibility braces before with the HR-03 series. So, it shouldn't be an issue with their sink.
