AMD needs to price the X2 competitively so OEMs keep using it in their system designs. Intel will be flooding the low-end market with Dual-core chips (more so than right now) so AMD needs to have something somewhat competitive. Otherwise you'd see all the OEMs going to Intel just so they can fill the "Dual-Core" check box.

Yes. The X2 3800+ is already available for 180 Euros at our online retailers here...150ish seems doable...
Didn't believe it before either... :)

I have a Athalon 64 3500+ (socket 939) right now and was considering upgrading to a faster processor or a X2. Since I use my machine for gaming and don't run apps in the background, is it worth it to buy a X2 3800+?

Harsh decision.

I'm in the exact same boat. I have the original A64 NewCastle 3500+. I'm looking to replace it with an X2 3800+ as well.

Truth be told it won't be much use to me at first and I'm debating getting it later when it drops even further in price but it depends on what you want to do. Do you game? Even if you do most games don't take advantage of dual cores. Faster CPUs only help with games in lower resolutions and not in the high end 1650 x 1080 (widescreen) or 1600 x 1200.

So if you run things in lower resolutions it could mean more benefit to you today. However you might be better off getting more RAM or doing a video card upgrade instead as you will see massive performance differences at high resolutions there.

I'm still debating. I'm in an even worse position since I have an ASRock motherboard that allows me to upgrade to the AM2 processor with an added card and changing the jumpers. However I don't like doing that.

I think I'm just going to wait and see. Most likely I'm going to get an X2 3800 and OC it a bit to maybe 2.4. I'll be happy enough with that for a couple of years I think. However if I'm going to go this way I want the EE or EE SSF chip.

I don't see why AMD wouldn't if Conroe is completely waxing it. Only a fool would buy an Opty if this is the case....it always boils down to bang for buck....

Forget that, go for a 3500+. I just ordered one yesterday for $88.06 plus shipping from eWiz... OEM chip but I already have several HSFs. Use a Froogle link for the lower price, otherwise just over $90.

I agree, but why buy x2? If they go to $50 they might be worth it for the budget systems.

I think $50 is too much for an X2 ; X2's should be priced between $3- $10.

There is no reason not to go dual core. All new and future games will be multithreaded. Oblivion is, IIRC HL2 is, Q4 is, FEAR is, prey probably is...

Im not sure where the debate as to whether or not AMD will cut prices comes from. AMD said so themselves a couple months ago...Google is your friend...

The issue is debating whether they will fall to 150. The official price will bwe 169US, so we don't know for sure if the x2 3800+ will reach 150US anytime soon.

Chances are it will a few weeks after launch. It all depends on how well the 3800+ sells after conroe's launch. I have a feeling with low end conroe's at or near 150 bucks the price on the 3800+ will have to be at or below it to sell.

If AMD is capacity constrained and selling every chip they produce why did they issue warnings on their Q2 earnings. Does that mean they overestimated their yields?

We will have to see if AMD reduced prices further, though I think AMD will keep the 3800+ at an official 169US. If they see they need more oompy they mgiht do some rebates or something...

They warned on their revenue, not earnings. AMD doesn't give guidence on earnings.

What I think it means is AMD is no longer capacity constrained. There was an article in May that AMD inventory at the asian distributers was getting out of control, and discounts of 50% were common. I'll see if I can find it again.
