X2 - Do you need to see first one first?

I am renting some movies today for me and the missus to watch over the holiday.
I wanted to get X2, I have seen first one but she has not......will she be lost?

Nope, you do not need to see the first movie. And, in my opinion, it's a good idea that you don't because the first movie was pretty bad.

No. You can watch the 2nd one first. The plots are different.

I thought the first one was good BTW. 2nd one is more fun to watch though.

You miss out on some of the background b/t Jean, Wolverine, and Cyclops. If you're a fan of the comics you probably already know what happens anyway so seeing the first one isn't a priority. If you're not, it seems like it'd be in your best interest to see the first one beforehand.

it'll be a good idea to feed her the back story of mutants and the way there are viewed by non mutants etc. explain why which character is like what.

Does she have any background experience with X-Men? If so, then likely not.

Is she good with picking things up quickly in movies, or does she constantly nag "what's going on here?" when she dosen't know or dosen't want to wait a little for it to be more clearly revealed? If the former, she'll likely do alright with the movie, if the latter you need to sit her down and explain a lot of the mythos behind X-Men and what went on in the first movie.

And why not get X1 while you're at it? She's not seen it and it's always good to refresh yourself before seeing the sequel. Not to mention that that movie kicked serious butt and is an older rental and thus cheaper than new ones.

Both movies, while "loosely" tied together, can stand on their own Murpheeee

if i didn't watch the first one, the 2nd one would be pretty confusing, at least for a while.

If you have no experience with X-Men whatsoever, it might be a good idea to see the first one. Generally, though, you can watch X2 without seeing the first one, you might be confused at a few parts, however.
