I've read that the X2 will work with an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe but was wondering if I had to have the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium to use one...

I know your prolly gonna laugh being that I have a 4000+ but either way, its a good way to keep my options open. :)

Thanks in advance!

Ugh I'm good for not making any sense. lol I'm new to the site plz pardon my n00bness.

Is what I mean is:
I have a ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard and was wondering if I could put a X2 processor in it or not. Well maybe not just the ASUS, will any 939 socket motherboard be compatible?

X2s will work in all 939 motherboards if the mb manufaturer puts out a bios update for it.

It's been repeated many, many times but this is how it works. If your motherboard was designed to support any 90nm 939 chip, the chip will work. However, for the board to utilitize and "see" the dual core chip the motherboard will need a BIOS update.

Always check the motherboard makers website to see what bios is available and what it supports.

Not *every* socket 939 motherboard will be compatible with the X2. Well, OK, the motherboard itself might be, but the manufacturer has to release a BIOS update to enable X2 support. Yes, you can put an X2 in your ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe. Upgrade to BIOS 1010 while you can still bootup using your current CPU. Worst comes to worst I believe you can also boot up the first core from a dual-core Athlon 64 X2 to update the BIOS. Here's the CPU support listing for the A8N-SLI Deluxe:

I did check the site, which is why I put up links for each motherboard.

The Premium clearly states it supports X2 while the Deluxe doesn't...

But my chip is a 90nm so it will support it! Yay for me. :)

Sorry for this post spinning like a broken record. I was just wondering if the one I had would work.

Thanks for the input, it'll be important in the future when I upgrade my cpu. With SLI = 2x Geforce 6800 Ultra's I think I'll be set on the video end for a long while.

EDIT: Thanks for the link xtknight. This subject should be stickied, not this topic exactly just the context.

Yeah, I agree this info should be stickied within some general thread like dual core info, or something like that. Now I see what you mean with the premium/deluxe thing. ASUS just didn't bother to update the deluxe I guess. I'm sure you can count on their CPU support lists though.
