X2 4800 vs FX57

I'm finally able to build my "dream system" which will of course be used primarily for gaming and some video compilation. Its going to be a ASUS motherboard (waiting for the new N4 32XSLI type to be released) with dual 7800 GTX in SLI. The question is do I go for the X2 4800 or the single core FX57 (the FX57 would strain the budget a bit).

Any thoughts?

The Athlon FX-57 is a very good high-end CPU. On CPU-intensive games, Athlon 64 FX-57 is the best single-core CPU available on the market today. For overclockers, this CPU is also dream, since it has its clock multiplier unlocked.

Of course, the only problem with the Athlon 64 FX-57 is its price. Costing USD 1,100 in the US, on average will blow the budget of most users.

if gaming is the only thing you would do on your pc,
then the FX-57.
I kind of regret of getting an X2 because I don't even browse the web on my X2 computer.

So this board will have 2 X32 PCI-E slots!?

It'll have 2x16 PCIe, for an effective total of 32x. That's what ASUS says, anyway.

Which should add 0 performance but maybe it will increase performance for the next gen graphics cars coming out.

I doubt it. Even the top of the line cards hardly satuate the AGP bus, how are they going to take advantage of the even faster x16 PCI-E slot.

BTW, it's true that Nvidia is coming out with the nF4 x16 SLI so that they can make the current SLI chipset mainstream.

even if it is for a gaming rig, i would still go for dual-core because dual-core is the future and future apps and games will be multi-threaded. 10fps or so does not justify getting the FX, which costs more and is single-core. as of now, you will find the FX performs a little better in games, but a yr or 2 from now, the X2 will likely be the superior.

Heh - I'd love to see a benchmark showing the FX57 as being 10fps faster, in ANY game, than the X2 4800. Usually it's about 3 fps or so.

I just got my system together and everything runs flawlessly. I also had a hard time choosing which way to go but went the x2 instead and now i can run norton anti-vrus(stystem hog), prime 95 on both cores, firefox, and still right click on my computer and go to properties and have it bring up system specs without breaking a sweat. X2 FTW...IMO

4800+ X2. With the new beta multi-threaded drivers from Nvidia it runs Most new games as fast as the FX-57, but it's cheaper and crushes the FX in any multi-threaded app.

Phantom 404,

What type of motherboard are you using? I'm thinking of the similar build in a few weeks. Any bench numbers you can provide will be appreciated. I play Doom 3, BF2 and look forward to Quake 4. How is your 3dmark05?

I don't know how you can say that, since niether the 7800GTX or the X1800 is available on AGP. For all we know the AGP would be capped, we don't even know how close AGP 8x is to capping it. Plus the AGP bus was horribly put together, and who knows how well it actually sends the upper bandwith stuff, with all of the hack and runarounds they did to hit those 8x potential bandwidth numbers. Its Like DDR, the Pontential banwidth is 2x SDRAM but was still only traveling at 100MHz and performance gains were still only a little above 25%.
