X2 4200 Performance?

I am going to be upgrading from a Asus A7V266-E / Athlon XP2400+ to Asus A8V Deluxe / Athlon X2 4200. Will I see a significant increase in performance? Boot-Up, Apps, video et. I run CAD and photo/video editing programs. No gaming.

You will definitely see a boost. This is especially true if you do any of those things at the same time. That's where the dual core processors really shine.

Yes, you will see a substantial increase in system performance. You will also notice that you will be able to multitask a good deal smoother between diffrent programs.

Yes, even in single threaded apps, the x2 4200 is substantially faster than a 2400+, and most of the tasks you list have fully multi-threaded applications available, due to the fairly common use of dual processor in those areas over the years - whether the apps you use currently do is another question, but you should be able to find the answer to that easily enough.

You will definitely see a major boost.

But, out of curiousity, do you like Via based boards? Personally, I think Nvidia, ATI, ULi, and SiS all make better chipsets than Via.

Wow, will you see a performance boost alright. You managed to wait long enough that this is going be a huge kick in the pants for you 😛

I don't think there would be THAT big of a difference between an XP 2400+ to an X2 4200+; I mean, he is just changing a P to a 2 and switching two numbers around... 😛

Obviously you won't get double the performance of the A64 3200+, but look at the difference between the A64 3200 and the 2400+ XP. It's a fairly wide margin of difference.

I went from a 2500+ XP to a 3000+ A64. The difference in performance is like night and day. Games didn't chug in high res, and I started to bottleneck my 9700pro. 🙂
