I am torn between what to buy to upgrade my system. I dont overclock at all and just use my system mostly for WOW and photoediting. What should i get ? I more inclined forward the 4000+ since i dont overclock and the 4200+ just cost too much. what do you guys think ? Also, i am gonna get the epox nf4 ultra with it and since this is the first time i get a X2, do i need a updated bios or any special driver for it ?

I was trying to decide between intel 830d and amd x2 4200..
after a loooot of researching of both cpus.. i decided to buy x2 3800 :)
Cause x2 3800 is faster than both intel 830d and 840d for my job(3d graphics/rendering)

now i bought x2 3800 with 2 gigs of ram, samsung sp sata2 hdd, cooler master case with 380W psu. I bought the Asus SLI mainboard with a SLI Gf 6600gt. in 1-2 months, i'll buy another 6600GT and it'll rock.

You can overclock 3800+ very easily. But i won't overclock anything cause i need my system veerrryy stable.( amd is very stable when its overclocked, but i wont take any chance.)

Just go buy 3800+...

Err, there is no X2 4000+, at least not yet. You might need to update your bios for the X2, and download the X2 driver from the AMD website. I have the 4200+ and I'm very happy with it. I do overclock though, mine is running at 2.618ghz on the stock AMD cooler.

I have the 3800+ ran it for a while then bumped it up to 2.2GHz so that's probably a good comparison (assuming you are looking at the manchester (2x512). I'd pay $40 for the difference.

I kept going on the O/C and am running happily at 2.4 (still stock air) I wouldn't pay the $630 premium for this speed... but for $320.... sure you don't want to learn to overclock? :D

I wouldn't spend the extra money on the 200mhz, even if you are not overclocking.

Exactly, no 4200. And i would'nt get that board either..volltage monitoring issues and it's built cheaply and has a wailing chipset fan.

Checkout Asus A8R-MVP or something like that..less money even i think.

You are paying $75 (or 20%+) more for 200mhz increase on both cores. Both chips have same cache. You can check out this review here: X2 3800+ vs. X2 4200+

Some places give Nero 7 Ultra FREE with the 4200+ X2 and not the 3800+, Fleabay the Ultra 7 for $60-$70 and the procs end up the same cost

I wish I had AMD x2 3800+ few weeks ago because I was not sure A64 3500+ is enough for Maya and 3DS MAX on cheap ECS KV2 Extreme motherboard. :(

I've got my X2 3800+ running at 2450MHz on stock cooling, 1.45v, 42C load. That makes it 50 MHz faster than a 4600+

The 4200+ isn't worth it if you ask me.
