ok i just got my x2 3800 yesterday, i put it in my motherboard and i am sure that i applied very little thermal paste (just enough) and i put my TTBig Typhoon hsf on it, reconnected all the cables and booted up at default bios settings, WinXP x64 booted with no problems so i rebooted and went into the bios and started to overclock...i got up to 270x10 with a 1:1 mem divider 3-3-3-8 timings and i ran two instances of prime95 (its the 64bit edition) on both cores...i made sure i set the affinities properly...and prime95 ran stable for about 2 or 3 hours...i then rebooted my machine and it wouldnt boot properly anymore, it would sometimes freeze at the bios menu, it would sometimes go into windows and just reboot right when it gets to the desktop...

i thought maybe its my ram and i took one stick out and i left only one stick in the mobo (in the 3rd slot) and still it wouldnt boot...i then set the bios to its default settings and tried to boot with its defaults and still it would reboot at windows....i took out the x2 3800 and i put back my old a64 3500+ and it booted fine. For this asus a8v deluxe i had the 1017 bios, i think its the latest one, but now i flashed it back to an older bios the 1015 bios, and i placed the x2 3800 back in, it booted fine...i went back into the bios and i started to overclock and again i got up to 270x10 1:1 mem divider 3-3-3-8...and prime95 ran stable for 8hours....i decided to reboot just to check...and guess what...same symptoms it wont boot properly.....wtf is going on here ! is it a bad processor? bad mobo? someone help !

edit: also i put the htt to 4x and 3x and it stillwouldnt boot properly...and i also reset the cmos as well and still same problems

Wow, nice blank reply...... <<<<<---------Blank Damnit Blank!
Anyways, as I was going to say..

You changed the HAL (Hardware abstraction layer, how the OS communicates with the hardware) when you put in that X2, you really should have a fresh install of Windows, even though the thing boots fine to start.

NM, that wouldnt explain locking up in the bios menu.

I think you just pissed it off :)

I miss my A8V deluxe, great mobo. Now I am on the is A8V-SE so I can run PCi-E. Not nearly as good for OC.

You could just create a new partition on your HD and go from there - rather than reformatting. That way you could still use your old CPU if you ever got a wild hair.

Btw - it's a 939 3800, right? I ordered my rig yesterday and I've got an AM2 3800 on the way - just trying to see what kind of OC you're getting - 2.7 GHz is impressive.

HAL?? That sucks.......would be a pain in the ass to reformat. Especially since I reinstalled XP a few months back. Did you forget to install the X2 driver?

Download the dual core optimizer (top of page) and the X2 driver (bottom of page)

Here is a good thread on the subject: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=28&threadid=1900618&enterthread=y

thanks

i have another question does the x2 produce more heat than a regular single core a64? i mean i would think its obvious and it should create more heat but i'm just asking to make sure...

right now i'm stable at 270x10 1:1 mem 3-3-3-8-1t, and the temp ranges from 34c to 48c ..which is a 14c increase...

ok....i think i found the root of my reboot problems...after installing the x2 dual core optimizer, every time i get to the windows desktop it would j ust reboot...i went into safemode and disabled the dual core optimizer from starting and the reboots are gone....does this happen to anyone else? is there a way to fix this?
