Couldnt find a thread with this topic when I searched so I wanted to ask what to raise the vcore to if I'm trying to go for a moderate OC of 2.4 Ghz. Thanks.

2.4 should be easily reached on the stock vCore...considering you have decent cooling. I wouldn't push it past 1.45 regardless of the speed.
Yeah 2.4 shouldn't be a problem at all. My X2 3800 can run @ 2.55 on stock volts.
So you won't see any temp increases running @ 2.4
You won't see much increase, but running a CPU faster does generate more heat because the transistors are turning on and off more per second, which uses more power than keeping them on or off.

WOW!!! where did you buy that CPU? cause it seems like they have great stock!!!
then how come some CPU's at different speeds have the same TDP,
based on what you're saying the x2-3800+ and the x2-4200+ should have a different TDP yet they are both rated 89W and for some reason the 4600+ is 110W.
Why isn't the 4200+ rated at like 100W or so?
I bought the last two that ASI had in Dallas, TX until they receive a new shipment. Their other location around the USA had some. Keep in mind that you need to be a reseller to purchase from them.
I was able to complete a 32M SuperPi @ 1.4v but Prime95 fails after 5 min. so I am still tinkering. Right now I am at 1.47v w/ two instances of Prime95 running as I type this reply. My full load cpu temp is 49C, but keep in mind that it is 26C (79F) in my room since I just got home.

I'm leaning toward an X2 3800+ combo to OC.
When OC the X2 chips, it's not recommended to go over 1.45v. Why is that specifically? It makes sense since there is 2 cores, but does going over 1.45v result in temperatures being too high?

IMHO 1.55v is a more realistic threshold. Just try to keep the full load cpu temps under 60-65C.
My x2 3800+ is running 2650 MHz @ 1.500v with 49C max load temp in 80F ambient air. Plenty safe and stable.......
Sorry if the question is stupid. I just want to know what max o/c you could achieve on a decent air cooling as xp90 on this stepping. I have the exact stepping sitting on my desk waiting for mobo.
John, keep us posted on how your OC pans out. I think we've got a lot of people in here scooping up the 3800 X2's that are looking to OC.
I was able to get 2700MHz @ 1.52v 52-54C (full load) under dual prime95 large FFT (max heat) torture test. I can run 2.8 but prime fails after an hour and I don't want to raise the core voltage anymore. I am using AS5 w/ an XP90 + Vantec 92mm stealth fan.
Nice - I assume you used the methods outlined in Zebo's guide? I only ask because that's what I'm planning to use...
My cooling is an XP 90 as well although I have a 92mm Thermaltake fan on a regulator. Am considering getting a Panaflo high speed fan as they have an excellent rep for quiet performance. I figure if I hook it up to the regulator, I can make it even quieter. BTW, what kind of ram and settings are you using?

I've been overclocking since the Celeron 300a era (1998) though so I've got a little experience behind me. His guide is useful though and I hope that people continue to benefit from it.

I'm only after a moderate overclock for my newly installed X2 3800+.
First got my X2 3800+ in. Installed it. Started it up. No post. WTF? Turns out I forgot to plug in the 6pin power cable (or was it 4pin?) to the motherboard and thus the system was not getting enough juice just from the 24pin mobo cable.
Kinda fubared the also new AC Freezer 64 Pro and didn't get good contact. Temp was 49-50C idle which is not that good. Re-installed the AC Freezer and got 48C idle.
Put the sucker to 1.4v core and loaded her up and tried for 2.7ghz. Would post and would load to Windows but when I try to run Prime95 it would fail after only a few minutes. I'm sure if I notched it up to 1.45v I'd likely get it running stable but I was only after a moderate overclock so I lowered the core to 2.69ghz and did testing and kept dropping it. Right now I'm at 2.65ghz and testing. At 2.66ghz with dual Prime95 testing, Core 0 was fine but Core 1 failed after 20:56. Just a few hours shy of the 24 hour mark. I'll be heading home tonight and see how it goes.
Temps during the current run at 2.65ghz was 48C idle and 63C load. Keep in mind this was in an uncooled room with outside temps in the 90's F. When I had the air conditioning on to how I keep it normally in my room, the CPU was showing 55C at load. In fact, as I type this, the temp outside is 100F. I'm trying to go for a super stable overclock. If it survives this torture test, I don't think I'll have to worry about it at all.
My RAM is ok. Not great. It's suppose to do 200mhz at 2-3-3-6 1T timings but it's absolute crap as far as overclocking. But raw CPU speed for the most part trumps higher RAM speeds so I have it at the 266 setting which drops my RAM down to 177mhz and I have it at 2-4-4-8 1T timing.
EDIT: Ok, temp outside was 100F today. It was sitting at 55C load when I left the house but that was with the AC on. I had the door to my room closed and it was SCORCHING in there with the AC off. I'm sure in excess of 100F inside the computer case. 2.65ghz at 100F outside temperature was 50-51C idle and 65C when I got home. Core 0 was still running but Core 1 conked out on me again at roughly 23 1/2 hours. Tomorrow will be another scorcher, going to drop it to 2.64ghz and see if it passes the dual Prim95 torture test in 100F heat.

I agree that one could push the vcore to 1.55, but this normally and I do mean normally only offer a slight increase in speed, which I just don't think it is worth as the temps normally raise to the upper limits quickly.

Final overclocking results. X2 3800+ stable at 2.64ghz @1.4v. 27 hours and 27 minutes was when I stopped the dual Prime95's 51C idle temp and 65C load. This is with 100F temperatures outside, and my room is on the 3rd floor where all the heat collects so it's probably 105'ish F. I started the torture test at roughly 9:30 to 10pm est. and ended it the next day at roughly 1am the next night. The air conditioning was on from the time I started the test to roughly 11am the next morning when I left for work. From 11am to 9:30pm the AC was off to give it the CPU a little more torture in this torture test. I get about 46C and 55C when the AC is on.
AMDUALY, what was your HSF and case and what was the ambient temperature? I don't think I'll hit anywhere close to 35C idle and 49C load except in the winter time. I do have a higher overclock but you're using a higher vcore so it's a little puzzling for me to have such a higher temperature than you.
