X2 3800+ OC on stock HSF?

I've been running my new X2 3800+ for a week now on stock settings. So far, so good. I've run Prime 95 on both cores simultaneously and tested for 12+ hrs with no reported failures. Now I'm at the point where I'm considering a mild overclock. The problem is that I'm a complete newb when it comes to overclocking. Even after reading the sticky thread I'm not 100% sure where to start. Actually, I do somewhat understand the thread but when I go into my bios I find it hard to determine which settings I need to change and which ones I leave alone. Is it safe to tinker with these settings as long as I don't bump them up too far?

Here is what I have :

AMD X2 3800+ cpu currently at 2.0ghz.
DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D motherboard
2gb PC3200 ram (IBM Infineon chips 4x512mb)
550w power supply. (not exactly sure what brand)

I'd like to hit a safe speed using stock HSF for now until I can get better cooling. Is 2.4ghz reasonable with stock HSF?

Mine runs just fine at 2.5 with the stock HSF, just replaced the thermal pad with AS5.

Thx for the responses guys. :)

I tinkered with some settings tonight and was able to reach 2400mhz but I started getting a few odd IE errors so I rebooted and reset the settings back to their defaults for now. I did not tinker with ram timings or speed at all though and I think that might be the source of my errors.

Basically I set the board for 240x10 and set the LDT/FSB ratio to 3x. I left the CPU core voltage to AUTO. When I booted to Windows and opened Smartguardian. CPU temp was reading 25c and chipset was at 43c. This is only 2-3c above stock temps. CPU voltage was reading 1.4v.

I think I need to read up more on how to adjust the speed of the ram. I'm using some IBM PC3200 made by Infineon.

If anyone can give some advice on tweaking settings on a DFI Lanpart UT NF4 Ultra-D I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm reading all the posts I can find but some of the stuff on memory timings/speed is rough for a newbie to understand. :D

Well, I've been able to hit 2400mhz now with no instability problems. (at least not yet!) Before I was getting iE crashes but I changed my memory divider to 166 and the system stabilized. I have the voltage set at 1.425v right now and Smartguardian is reading 1.37v and the AMD monitor reads 1.4 so I think my voltages are safe.

My concern now is temps. CPU temp seems good idling around 27c. I ran 2 instances of Prime 95 (one on each core) for about 10 minutes. No problems were reported. My CPU temp never went above 48c. My concern though was that Smartguardian showed my PWM IC temperature at 50c and indicated a warning. I'm guessing 50c is too high for that chip? Any suggestions or can this be ignored?

When I stopped the Prime 95 tests the temperatures dropped back to normal. 27c for CPU, 35c for PWM IC and 43c for chipset.

I have mine running at the same settings (except 250x10) and volts at 1.42 - 1.44. At load i get temps around 54-55 but from what I've read this seems acceptable for many people. I primed for 8hrs with no errors at these settings. I suggest you run prime for an extended period (many will recoment atleast 12hrs) but just use whatever would be necessary for your computer use. I rarely (if ever) run my computer at load (unless im trying w/ prime etc.) so I'm not too worried about it reaching 55.

50 at load is fine IMO.

Thanks purple. :)

I read your thread and decided to bump up to similar settings. Right now I'm running 250x10 and HTT 3x. Memory is set at 133 right now and was reading 332mhz in nTune. When I tried 150 it was reading 500mhz and when set at 166 it was somewhere around 732. Not sure how accurate nTune is but that made me kinda nervous. LOL

So far, Smartguardian has peaked at around 54c for CPU temp and 56c PWM IC temp and 47c for chipset. System has been stable thankfully with no errors reported. I ran through 3dMark05 with no problems.

I also have mine at 2.4ghz with ram set at 200mhz. My load temp is 52-55 and idle is 35-39. I'm not too happy with these temps and am hoping my new AMD heatpipe HSF will help.
