X1950XTX - Catalyst 6.8 not able to install

I got a Powercolor X1950XTX. I installed the drivers and control center that came with it. After installing, I noticed that it is Catalyst 6.7.

I uninstalled the ATI drivers. Cleaned the Registry and deleted the Temp folder files, per ATI instructions and ran Driver Cleaner Pro, in Safe Mode, cleaning the cab file and any stray ATI drivers.

I then tried to install Catalyst 6.8 from the ATI site. A minute into installation, it gives a no INF file found error. I tried two more times, deleting all drivers and using Driver Cleaner Pro, in safe mode, and got the same error and on the second try, I even tried downloading the individual files and it does the same thing on the first one, the Display Driver Only file specifically.

Do you think something is wrong with the drivers (do not have an INF file, as the error reads), although it seems ATI would have fixed that if that were the case since the 6.8 has been out for a month?

Could it be that Catalyst 6.7 can recognize the X1950 but the 6.8 can not and therefore produce that error code?

Could a defective card cause this?

The 6.7 work okay, I am just concerned going forward, if no higher catalyst drivers will work on this new card and since I have never used ATI I am not sure how ATI handles issues like this.

Any suggestions?

From what I recall, Cat6.8 still displayed its version as 6.7...I'm guessing that your card maybe came with a modified version of 6.8 (that still didn't have the version number fixed? 😕[/i]) to work with the X1950, since 6.8 came out before the X1950 series did...

I'd be very surprised if the next official drivers (6.9, should be coming pretty soon I imagine) didn't have support for their new cards.

Yeah good call by SynthDude. Use the ones that came with your card until the 6.9's come out (And make sure to check that the 6.9's support X1950 in the release notes - which I'm sure they will).

it mean my card is defective?

For possibility of overall, I found this on a video card test web site:

"To find out, we loaded our test cards into the following system. For Nvidia cards, we used the ForceWare 91.33 drivers. For ATI's released cards we used Catalyst 6.8, and for the new X1950 XTX we used the official ATI driver that will ship with the card." http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2007198,00.asp

It seems the tester would have used 6.8 if it worked. So maybe it is a X1950, as a whole, issue.

Thanks for all replies and advice.

It is just perplexing. It is strange that an older driver version would recognize a new card but a newer driver would not. Seems it would be the other way.

I guess I will try the 6.9 BETA as other X1950 user have done that and it worked well. I am hesitant because I read on some other forums that the Beta 6.9 show 6.7 or 6.6 in the about information in the control panel, so I wonder if they are even real 6.9 drivers.

I am just worried if my card is defective and I wait until 6.9 are officially released to find they do not work either, my 30-day return window will shut and the seller and maker might not consider not being able to use newer drivers to be a defect and I might be stuck with a very nice card but one that can not be updated in software.

I have a Sapphire X1950XTX, and i had exactly the same problem with 6.8. I had to use the driver supplied on the cd.

But the real bummer is that with 6.9 IT STILL HAPPENS! Still can't install!! Same stupid INF error.

I checked the .inf file in the 6.9 driver, and x1950 isn't listed there :|

Same error here. Built by ATI x1950xtx oem came with no driver cd only 6.9 beta would install card. now installed 6.9 release and still no luck... Gah!

Error Message is:

Severe

INF error
Video driver not found!
