crashed in return to proxycon on 3dmark06 but ill run it tomorrow morning

it's somewhat low ... look at mine with a lesser system beats yours by almost 1,000
--and check temps the 'instant' you come out of an ap or game

Checking temps right after exiting the game isn't the best indicator of stressed temps at all. Get ATiTool or Rivatuner (I'm not sure Riva works with Ati cards though) and run a graph of GPU temps that you can refer back to and see the highest temps after you exit the game.

Also, doesn't this card have a well-known tendency to overheat its voltage regulator? Maybe that's what it causing the lockups and errors..

al-tab in the middle of a game works pretty well to see the max temp
-yeah ... run the graph ... if you still have it when it all crashes :p

and a defective x1950 overheats the regulator to the point of crashing ... his may well be defective

the best way is to try it in another rig ... since he has tried another GPU in his rig without issues already ;)

i am starting to suspect the card

alt-tab will work, but there are 2 problems with that method. The first is that you are going to see temps that are cooler than they were just mere seconds before you alt-tabbed. My 6600gt with the Zalman cooler drops by 5c (sometimes more) within seconds of closing a game.

The other problem is that even if it were reporting maximum temperatures, they would only be the maximums for that particular moment. If you look at a graph of GPU temps over time of playing a game, they are nowhere near stable. At some points the card can be running quite a bit warmer than others. On my 6600gt for example, in Oblivion there are times when the GPU reaches 70c, but there are also times when it is down around 60c. That's a pretty big difference.

Not trying to knock you personally apoppin, its just that if he wants to see the highest temp his card is reaching, then alt-tab just isn't going to cut it.

i totally agree

but IF your rig *crashes* your graph is kinda hard to look at :p
-it is OK for 'vpu recover' but not if the whole system goes down

alt tab works quick enough IF you suspect your GPU is overheating ... i do it under the most intense demanding scenes ... it doesn't cool that fast

and i did it a LOT ... to get an 'average' of temps
--but then i primarily used it when i had problems with my whole rig going down ...

you are supposed to write the serial number down

was the package "sealed" ?

tell newegg it's the *same* problem and that your rig works fine with a different GPU ... try the 'live chat' with CS ... i think you got 9 minutes left for today

i'd suggest go for another RMA and make sure you get another card

THEN if is the 3rd card ...

i dunno

.... power supply? ... poltergeist ?

well that IS right on :p

still crashing?

did you ever get those max temps? ...
--a tidbit i found from someone with a similar 'crashing' problem

I changed the airflow so i've a case fan blowing side on to the card, AND
with the wonderful ATI TOOL adjusted the card fan to be at 100% before 50c
is reached. I've had no problem since at stk clock settings.

i think my problem was i installed a small fan on the NB to cool it down..but i think that was blowing hot air onto the back of my card

sorry

.... your issues appear to be heat-related ... perhaps the core and the HS aren't making proper contact

what were your temps alt-tabbing out of intense scenes in games?

if you are still getting crashes and it isn't OC'd and you can't improve the cooling, RMA it
... my x1950p has to put up with 80sF for 'room temps'

I think this is a heat related issue, and the heatsink needs to be resat or rma the card again.

my 2 cents...
