X1950 Pro or 7900 GT?

this will come down to a matter of preferrance on whether you like ATI or NVIDIA more, both are equally good cards, I would say go with the 7900GT

I agree with UMfanatic, although I don't know if I would say which one you prefer, rather, I would choose the one that performs the best in the games you own/are going to own.

Nvidia is better in some games, ATI is better in others.

Both are good cards, though. Either way you will get good performance at an affordable price.

yes, there are certain games geared towards certain chipsets, like doom3 I believe is enhanced for nvidia chipsets, in corrolation with what regnez said, both are extremely good cards, top of the line below the 8800, it really does boil down to your own research and which you prefer, I have been an ATI man for 3 years, and I am going back to Nvidia because my preferences and needs have changed

also one easy way to decide is research the games you want to play and how they preform with each chipset

Thanks for the help so far. I've checked out the link to Tom's Hardware, however the only game in the list that I play is Half Life 2, and the resolutions only go up to 1600x1200 (though that is pretty close to 1680x1050...) Where else would I be able to research this?

edit: I play mainly Half Life 2, CS: Source, NHL and Madden right now, and I want to get Rainbow Six: Las Vegas soon.

Personally I'd say the x1950 pro. ATi seem to do a little better in the Source engine (much like nVidia takes off in the Doom 3 / Quake 4 engine). The x1950 pro is pretty great at that price level. Go for it!

No fan of Tom's, but their VGA chart is a very useful consolidation of a huge number of benchmark results. It's not reasonable to expect it to have every game you play at precisely the resolutions you choose. The HL2 bench @1600x1200 should be a very good guide for your requirements.

thanks, I wasn't expecting it to have every game I play or anything like that 😛 I was just wondering if anyone knew any other links similar to that, so I could check out some more benchmarks. It looks like I'll be going with the X1950... seems like the better of the two cards, especially for the price difference. Thanks to everyone who has helped 🙂

an easy way to find out is go to forums about the games, people will talk about it or type in the video card with the game in google

Thanks, I guess I should have thought of that... :disgust:
