What's the next best thing? I've read so so things about the VF900...but at 40 bucks, is it worth it?

Guide me.

I just bought a ThermalTake Duo Orb for 40$, it has two fans instead of one and it's based off the zalman vf900, i get idle 42 / load 75-85 , at idle this thing is whisper quiet , at load it's not loud but you can definitely hear a high pitch whine that's common with 80mm fan's , accelero makes a heatsync called the S1, if you have the space in your case for that massive cooler i'd go for that, it's passive cooling (meaning no fan) but you can mod it with a 120mm fan, although be aware that this humongous cooler can possibly block your SATA ports on your motherboard, or may not even fit. But if your using that p180 like it says in your sig the accelero should cool fine, just make sure you use all available fan slots in your p180 if you decide to keep an accelero passive. FYI stock coolers at 100% do a decent job of cooling, don't expect a miracle with the temps, I'd upgrade only if i was looking for a quieter solution.

In California - so we're a little far away. Anyone running the Accelero S1?

I highly recommend that nobody installs that on their video card as it's nearly permanent. I've read horror stories of people removing it and ripping off RAM chips. Accelero X2 = very bad option.

The accelero X2 sticks to the ram very tightly too (I had one on my X1950XT). Trick is to use a razor blade and cut between the chips and the sink, then clean it off.

I have a used Thermaltake TMG-AT1 that I had before I went water. Might need new ram pads though, but if the OP is interested, PM me.

Another option is the gigabyte V-power

It was on newegg for a bit cheaper but I can't seem to find it there

So - I bit the bullet and got the Accelero S1. So far, I haven't really had a chance to play with it any but in the immediate time I had it on (about an hour or so) it dropped my temps from 85ish at load to 55ish at load and from the mid 60s at idle to the high 40s at idle.

Without a fan. It's a totally passive cooler. And what a freakin' difference it's made not having that vacuum cleaner of a fan in my case, spinning up and down to adjust to the temps and such. Even though it was the ICEQ version, it was still very loud.

The installation, however, was rough. I found that getting the ramsinks to stick was the roughest part. That's been said in many tutorials for this particular heatsink aaand they're right. I had to use AS5 to get a few of those things to stick but after that...and for $20...what a steal.
