Not likely all that much.

You don't buy an X1900XTX to play @ 1280x1024 or lower. The 7800GT, maybe X1800XT are better suited for that resolution.

I wouldn't bother for a 19" LCD, the 7800GT (or better yet 7900GT) are the highest cards that make sense for that resolution.

X1900XT for 1280x1024 4AA/6AA and 16AF and above. Otherwise get a 7900GT or X1800XT in a week. XTX is a waste of money period.

Once again, I disagree.

Unless you upgrade your video card every 3 months, I would say the X1900XTX is not overkill. If you're a guy (like me) who cranks the IQ to the absolute maximum becasue you're stuck at 1280x1024, a single 7800GT or X1800XT is not enough.

If you're someone who doesnt care to crank the IQ settings than it might be overkill, but I for one, cannot get enough image quality.

An X1800XT 256 for $349 is the best card if you're playing 1280x1024, anything else is overkill for now.

:thumbsup: Agree 100%. A card like the 1900xt(x) could last 2+ years easily at 12x10 res., or if you happen to upgrade to a bigger monitor in the near future you'll be set. I though a lot about this before I upgraded.... I'm on a 17"LCD and I was making the switch over to pcie. I was going to go with a 7800gt, but then realized I could go all out and be able to play just about any game out now maxed, and still be able to play new games a year from now. The advantage of the 1900 series in shader intensive games sealed the deal for me, so I got an XTX. The only reason I got it over the XT was the fact that the XTX is supposed to overclock better, which makes a better long term solution in my eyes, and it had a rebate when I bought it so it was only like $60 more.

playing at 12x10, my 9800 pro lasted me 3-4 years... you might ask wtf does this have to do with ur question but i have to say, 9800 pro was pretty over kill for every game there was out at the time.... it still does fine in most games with IQ off or low but this might give you insight to your question... get the best at the time and itll last you quite a long time =)

I would say don't buy a graphics card until the end of March at the earliest.
See how the new cards (X1900 and by then 7900) perform at next gen games (Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) which should be out by the end of March.
FEAR is the other game, but it's one game, soon we will have double that number to indicate next gen performance.

Mid range is still best value imo. 200 dollar price range is king. Last year, the 6600GT was worth around 170 dollars and played most of the games on 1280/1028 on half decent settings. This year, it only fell 60 or so dollars in price. You can expect similar things from the other midrange cards this year. Constantly upgrading to the new midrange every year on 1280/1028 resolutions isn't a bad solution imo.

Dont listen to anyone saying a x1900xtx is overkill for 1280x1024. I use my xtx at 1280x960, and it lets me play games like FEAR and COD2 at max settings, whereas a 7800gt user would have to turn down settings.

i have a 7800 gt now. is it worth for me to trade it in for the x1900 xtx? In terms of size....... is the x1900 xtx longer? i know it takes up 2 slots but will it fit in my aspire qpack case?

$80-$100 for the letters XTX is a waste is what I am saying. Unless you are into voltmodding and pushing the core beyond 700mhz, you are paying $100 for the letter X. Also, looking back 9800XT didnt last any longer than 9800Pro, neither did 5950 Ultra over 5900XT and neither did Ti4600 over ti4200, neither did X850XT PE over X850XT. This shows that unless money isnt a factor, buying the absolute top of the line has seriously diminishing marginal utility. If X1800XT 256mb falls to $299, it'll be hard to argue that X1800XTsx2 > X1900XTX. That's why it makes sense to wait a week or 2 to see where prices fall and how 7900GTX stacks up.

i would imagine that the "better" part would pertain to the scale of the CPU, meaning how fast a CPU you have and what game you are playing. some games are more cpu bound for fps as others are more reliant on the vid card. When you go to higher resolutions, the card will be taxed more.
