I just upgraded and am not seeing the improvement I expected.

For example, in the crysis gpu benchmark, my average framerate waws 18. Then with the 3870, it was 28fps.

I was atleast expecting 35 fps. Also, when I play in game, I can't even play on high as it goes to 20fps

Crysis is not going to run well on anything, you shouldn't base the performance of one card in one crappy benchmark.

My guess is that the problem might be your CPU because Crysis really benefits from Dual Core Technology. What kind of resolution are you running the game at and what quality settings?

So can you or can you not return the 3870? You might be starting to be cpu limited.. but regardless the 4850 is better buy than the 3870.

forgot to say, i got a 3600 x2 with it so thats not the problem
Sure it is - your CPU is too slow to push the 3870 properly. That and you're probably running a low resolution like 1680x1050 without AA.

I've overclocked the CPU to 2.7ghz so thats not that slow although I do agree that its probably slow and I do want a 3GHz Quad Core CPU but thats out of my range at the moment.
Secondly, I run all my games at 1280x1024(17 inch LCD) with AA and AF if possible.
So, how much is my CPU affecting performance.
