X1800XT temps

I've got a question about my x1800XT 512MB. It runs at stock settings, and is not overclocked at all.

I'm just curious, is 86-87C load temps hot?

I've run Quake 4 and NFS: Most Wanted and I get those temps when I play, there has not been any artifacting but I'm just worried it might run on the hot side...

I use stock cooling by the way, and I have not done any adjustments to the speed of the fan.
 
Yes that is getting too hot. Ati default fan speeds are way too low. You want to keep it below 80C. Go under advanced options in ATItool and change the fan speed.

ex. Tell it to run 40% fan speed at 60C, 45% at 65C 48% at 70. I found that going higher than 50% makes the fan loud, so make it 55% at like 78C.

That should cool it down.
 
I would highly recommend you look into some nice aftermarket cooling. My AC Accelero X2 only cost me $32 and it is dead silent, and my load temps don't reach the mid 60's.
 
I'd be very surprised if you could overheat your soundcard enough to seriously impair it's performance or reduce it's life expectancy 🙂
