extra $100 worth it?

Yep, that would stomp the snot out of the XT.

The cheapest retail XT at newegg is $579 :Q

The cheapest retail GTX at newegg is $449

That's a $130 difference. None of the reviews that I read put the XT as the clear winner so why waste the extra $130 for a dual slot and noisy card?

I personally don't want the hassle of Sli/Crossfire. It's performance is spotty. Some games benefit greatly, some barely. Then the percent difference is all over the charts. If for the games you find yourself playing the most, you can clearly see an advantage with Sli/crossfire, the 7800GT Sli is a great combo.

Robert have you personally tested crossfire and seen those results? Or are you talking just based off what Sli is today?

Yes, your sarcasm detector isnt working today. :p

Joking aside, I was told that this card would be widely available and at similar or cheaper price levels as an X1800 XT.

I cant tell if your joking or not :p

I would rather get an X1800XL or the 7800GT compared to other high end products.
I should know better, been eyeing the 7800GT for a looooong time, sad thing is no good games are compelling me to upgrade. :D

I have not tested cross fire. Just basing it off Sli's lifespan so far. Perhaps cross fire will be different? hopefully we'll find out sooner than later.

I don't know about CrossFire, but honestly SLI is not a hassle. My rig was as easy to assemble and to use as any single card setup. It was however, quite expensive, but that is the obvious drawback.

Why indeed? Is the shiny new box really that important?

I ordered two 7800GTs yesterday. Those definitely seem to be the best current high end solution by some distance, even with the extra cost of an SLI board factored in. Two stock GTs appear to beat a stock 512MB GTX most of the time and you can get retail versions of the EVGA 460/1100 copper cards for $300 each from more than one online retailer at the moment. They also only use a little more power than a single 512MB GTX according to Techreport.

I haven't had any previous experience with SLI so I don't yet know if there are any major side issues involved. The only game I know of where SLI doesn't quite work is Far Cry with HDR enabled; everything else seems to get huge boosts at high resolutions.

X1800XT is well on it's way as long as the prices keep dropping. It's not quite there as of yet, but light years better than it was at launch. I know a few people on here that are pretty happy with theirs.

Me too hopefully it will benefit from the second card more than Sli which is about 75-80%ish.

X1800XT won every bench vs. 7800GTX 256

But like you said for $100+ difference, it isn't worth it. When X1800XT comes to $50 or less than 7800GTX, it'll be a better buy.

Well you can always cherry pick benchmarks. But I don't see enough of a performace gap to justify the extra hundred bucks or the dual slot cooler. At least the GTX 512 clearly crushes everything, but the cost of that is even more outrageous.

As did a lot of people. It's a great card and still is. For me, back in June my x800xt pe was good enough for the game that I played the most at that time (CS:S).

Currently, I need a new card to be able to play FEAR, Quake 4 and BF2 (mainly)with high settings. While I wanted a 7800GTX 512, it was $200-$250 more and I couldn't justify it. The x1800xt was only $50 more than a stock clocked 7800 256 and that was justifiable to me. Both are great cards and the 7800GTX 512, if could be found in stock for it's MSRP would be a great buy also.
