X1800XT 512MB OR 7900GT KO.

Average of all the tests, and from personal experiences of users here, which one do you think would be a better graphics solution?

X1800XT 512MB, or the 7900GT KO 256MB.

Which one would run cooler, or perform better, and assortment of things put together, averaging everything together, which one would be overall better buy??

Could someone help me out thanks.
 
Game performance wins would be traded back and forth with the OGL titles usually going to the 7900GT. The 7900GT runs cooler. The 7900GT is apparently not quieter though as its stock heatsink is small. I don't know about the specific version of the card you mentioned though.

The X1800 has better IQ and features but definitely runs hotter.

Personally the heat issue was not a big deal for me but the IQ was so I went with an X1800XL rather than a 7800GT at that time.

Oh and PLEASE use the search function, there were several threads about this subject already.
 
I think a gainward or xpertvision 7900 GT 512mb card is your best bet.

Here is your value for money - a 512mb 5900GT for the same price or slightly cheaper than most 256mb 7900GT's sell for.

It features a dual slot cooler and heatsinks for the memory too.

If xpertvision doesn't float your boat, you can get (literally)the same thing by Gainward

Memory on both cards is rated @1.2ns, comare that with most 7900GT's using 1.4ns memory, plus a decent heatsink that should definitely hewlp core overclocks.

Interesting factoid: Palit owns both Gainward and xpertvision. The cards are identical other than pcb color and silk screening. That should help ally any concerns over xpertvision (some doubted their reliability in my 6600GT 256mb thread).

^ hows the 512 7900gt cheaper? its around $500 , u can get a 7900gt 256 for 300-340
now back to the question i would go with the x1800xt, enless your willing to risk a v-mod with the 7900
the x1800xt is cheaper and runs just as fast, and it can oc nice
both cards are great and pretty much equal
 
GSTanfor, why did you link to Aussie prices?? Doesn't the OP live in the US?? Do they even sell Gainward in the US cause I can't find anything on NewEgg or Pricewatch.

To the OP, buy whichever card suits your needs. The pros and cons of both have been debated in several threads so decide what is more important to you and buy the appropriate card. They are both great performing cards.
 
Since I live in Australia, it's only natural that I would link to australian sites and talk in australian dollars.

I'm quite sure anyone intelligent enough to register and post here is also intelligent enough to do a search fro the products I mention in their own country.

Putting up Australian prices is useless since you can't just make a direct conversion much like British prices. Going by the site you linked, a 7900GTX costs over US$700 apparently...but obviously that's not what it costs in the US. I lived in Sydney for about 6 months last year and let me tell you hardware was damn expensive compared to what I would pay here in Canada so the 7900GT 512 may not be the value for money here.

Also, I don't think the Gainward card is available in the US.

Stock for stock, I'd go with the X1800XT, as long as noise isn't too big of an issue. I'm really happy with mine. If you're into modding and overclocking, you can probably get higher performance out of the 7900GT though. From what everyone says, the cooler is very quiet on the KO--not the case with the X1800XT. Also everyone I know with the 1800-512, including me, has been able to flash a different BIOS to make it 700/800, so there's potential there too.

One wonders why you can't find Gainward cards in the USA given their past and current reputation for providing high quality overclocked/overclockable cards.

The prices are very close are they not?

I haven't read so much about ATI for a while.

As for me - I'm thinking about 7900GT KO vs. x1900GT, but x1900GT sales for far more then KO for a while, so it doesn't justify x1900GT card for a while ;-(

let me (us) know if 7900GT KO has been "fixed" and ready for the prime time. I don't want RMA a card in 2-5 days for another RMA.

My KO RMA is running without problems. The original was the KO 520 and the RMA is the KO 500. One thing I noticed was a drop in frame rates. HL2 Lost Coast HDR was 67fps and is 55fps with the RMA, 3dmark showed a 18% decrease. 20mhz would not cause that big of a drop, but at this point I don't care as long as it works.

everyone agree that at stock ati is faster then NV and that 7900gt could be pushed far more then ATI. However after reading that from evga forum I don't see the point to OC at all - do you?
 
unless the thread topic is about buying hardware in australia (or wherever) it is quite useless... in this case, the OP is not in Aus. so those prices are irrrelevant.

for the GT to be equal to the XT at stock clocks, the GT needs to run about 550mhz core, and then the GT still lacks in texture filtering and ability to do concurrent hdr & aa (and some will further claim texture shimmering is more of an issue with the GT than the XT).

the XT does use a bit more power and certainly expels more heat (tho it vents it out of the pc case). as far as noise, the GT does not have the nice fan the GTX does, and while the actual decibels are similar, many people claim the XT is more noticeable as the "pitch" of the sound coming from the fan is more notcieable when the fan changes speeds.

from my own perspective, i've gotten used to it, and while every once in awhile i do notice the fan change speeds, it's not really bothersome (my pc is otherwise liquid cooled so it's very quiet in the first place, and sits on my desk about 18" away from me at ear level).

aside from those things, you'll simply have to do some research on current street prices to determine what you feel will be your best "bang for the buck".

for those that suggest the 1900GT, it is not only slower, but currently more expensive than the x1800xt 512 (at least here in the us). since the GT is going to replace the 1800xt at that pricepoint, if you decide to go ati, grab the XT while you still can.

and why is it there's a new thread on this very question almost daily? this topic has already been discussed to death in multiple threads...

Hypothetically, if I knew that you lived in Australia and you asked a question about prices, I'd at least make an effort to look for Aussie prices to help you out.

No one complained to YOU that Gainward cards were not available in the US it was just pointed out that they weren't available. Your posting about those cards means nothing to the OP if you can't buy em in the US right?? I mean your post WAS intended to help the OP wasn't it?? And if it wasn't then why bother posting?

Again, the OP lives in the US (I think) so you comparing UK prices to Aussie prices is AGAIN useless. Compare to US prices and see the difference...I mean you took the time to look for a UK website so can't you take the time to look for a US website?? Of course that Gainward card is not available in the US so you'll have to compare something else.

i'm happy with my apt mates build with the x1800xt. the image quality when playing games is second only to the x1900 series. he playes at 1280x1024 which is perfect for that card. i would take that over the 7900gtko or plain gt anyday. OP please let us know whats your decision
 
Apologies for not checking in... and explaining things.. and yes, I do live in the US ... so basically AUS prices are useless to me.
However I've did use the search .. and found many interesting threads, and I think I've come down to getting the X1800XT 512MB. from ATI off of Newegg.
Dang, that I've missed the 50 dollar promo.. really sucks huh? but it's still a good price nevertheless.
I'll let you guys know how the X1800XT holds up againist the 7800GT CO I used to own... I've read alot of reviews also, and it seems like the X1800XT tops the 7800GTX 256MB a bit.. so I'm quite happy over that..

The 7900GT not to be bashing on that card, nvidia has very good cards.. but I've heard many things about 7900GTs overheating, problems, issues with EVGA.. etc. .. so I'm a bit worried there.. I don't want to go about the RMA business =/

Also comparing the 500,1500 overclocked 7900GT KO to a stock X1800XT .. isn't really comparable is it..? underclock the 7900GT KO and we'll see.. but anyhow I don't plan on volt modding at all (scary thought of burning), so I've decided with the X1800XT.. and sorry about making another thread and being ignorant.. but I'm going with an X1800XT !! ^_^"

The problems with the 7900GT are all over, that was the first or second batch only. You think the 7900GT overheats 0__o, wait until you get that X1800XT. I've said it a lot, it's simple

If OC THEN 7900GT (even without the volt mod, at 550, it will be faster)
IF NO OC THEN X1800XT 512MB (not 256MB)

It will be faster in some games but just putting the 7900GT at 550 isn't gonna overcome some of the fps differences in games like Battlefield 2 and Oblivion. And you can do some OC with the X1800XT too, without any soft/hard mods, without increasing heat output to unbearable levels. Heat gets out of control once you touch the voltages.
 
My 1800xt runs 1280 in q4 and oblivion, no lags, awesome ******. Looks unbelievable as well. I have no qualms with my 256mb 1800....it does infact run very hot (accd to catalyst ~50-60c). The fan speeds up on its own and compensates when gaming. I like the bulkiness of the card, doesn't look or feel cheap, heatsink is a nice thin finned copper, with an aluminum heat spreader for the memory...nice design..solid card. Mine is a sapphire retail x1800xt 256mb GDDR3, 625/1500 from the factory, cost me $280 on newegg. 3dmark05 at 8500marks, 3dmark06 at close to 3600marks. I haven't tried overclocking it yet as it runs hot to begin with. Can't complain, haven't found a need to overclock it. Running Enemy Territory at 1280 res, vsync on, mipmaping quality maxed, AF 16x, 6x FSAA at 60 solid capped fps is reallll nice.

I don't know, nor do I reallly care why you cannot currently obtain these cards in the USA, I DO know that USA consumers can pressure their retailers to start stocking them

Once again though, this isn't the real issue, is it? This isn't really about availability it's about having a sly dig at gstanfor, especially when he presents a good alternative to an ATi product for people to consider, isn't it?

Oh, and honestly about USA availability, some of really don't care, unlike some Americans I realise there is an entire world outside the USA - it's kind of nice that the rest of us can get something nice before the 5000 pound gorilla does for once.

which one x1800xt would you go with? MSI comes with rebate - worse it?

I'm about to make the same move.
Initially I was about KO, but then after reading all about 7900GT and KO issues and RMA have change my mind to x1800xt ...
