X1800XT 256Mb or XFX 7800GTX OC

I would definately take the XT over the GTX,

Its generally faster
It has better AA (6x for the cost of 4x)
It has better AF (HQ angle independant), Better IQ
It has better Features (extremely efficient SM3)
etc...

I don't see why you wouldn't take the XT over the GTX at the same price, unless you dont want a dual slot cooler...

Get the GTX. The only thing that really gave the XT the edge in some benchmarks was having 512mb of memory.

Not true, none of the games take advantage of the extra 256MB today, read AT reviews.

The x1800xt is a faster and better card, and there is a no question about it.

Both cards will give you nearly identical real-world performance, trading wins back and forth depending on game. In fact, if someone snuck in and replaced the card you bought with the other, you probably wouldn't notice judging by just the performance.

The XT is more interesting in terms of features, as mentioned above.

I'm curious, how much cheaper is it than a 512M version? I mean, when you're blowing about 500 bucks for a video card, what's mowing a few more lawns or working a few more hours to get the 512M version?

Since the whole point of a card like this is mind-blowing resolutions with 6xAA, the extra headroom of 512M would certainly be cheap future proofing insurance.

The x1800xt without a doubt. Better performance, better feature set, great OC potential and an extra 256MB of RAM. No need to find the x1800xt 256 when the 512MB card is already at a good price.

I am curious why you say great oc potential? I see from your sig that yours oc'ed very well but my understanding was that this would be more the exception rather than the rule, is that not the case?

Personally I said "screw that" and paid $300 for a eVGA 7800GT that performs almost exactly on par with a stock speed GTX. Seemed good to me

EDIT* I just did a quick search using pricegrabber and it seems the cheapest X1800XT is $480 (512mb) and the cheapest 7800GTX is $450. If I had to choose between those two I would pay the few extra $ and get the X1800XT but I still stand by my saving $150 and getting the 7800GT. The few extra fps is not worth it to me.

There was an official bios leaked from Sapphire or Connect3D that gets any XT to 700Mhz core and 1600 memory. Sapphire is releasing the PE edition which is basically the normal XT with just the new BIOS.

I haven't heard of an XT yet that didn't hit 700 on stock cooling. AFAIK most go to around 740 on stock.

There is a thread or two on extremesystems.org and even some on hardforums about people flashing their x1800xt to x1800xt PE speeds of 700/1600. I'm sure a handful of cards won't like those speeds but majority of them seem to flash just fine (or you can just manually OC the card using Ati Tool). That was my reason. The 490/1300 cards don't seem to have a lot of OC'ing overhead left. My friend has a 7800GTX KO and the best we got was 497/1320 on the stock cooler.

Supposedly the R580 will be launched at the end of January and nvidia's next flagship in Feb. If availability is anything like the 7800GTX512MB for either card(next to none) expect ridiculously high street prices. If your brother will pay you a good deal for it, it's definitely worth checking out. I'm quite happy with my purchase and for the games that I play, BF2 and CS:S, the x1800xt will do just fine for quite some time.

Yup because those are never XT PE by ATI definition. They are speed binned by third party manufacturer and released in special edition just like eVGA selling the GTX and GTX KO.
