Same choice I had. Went with 7800gt due to several reasons:
1) better deal (much better= mid $200'ish)
2) less power consumption, means running cooler
3) nvidia has better driver (much better, imo)
Have had since 11/30 now and couldn't be happier.

OC in X1800XL is not that good. It uses the cores that suffered from leakage... is not the same core as the XT.
Also Mhz per Mhz 16pipes vs 20 really make a diference, you have to clock XL about 33% faster than the GT to reach the GT which is not easy.
If you were to choose from GTX and XT, I would say XT.

hey OP, just flip a coin, heads 7800gt, tails x1800xl.....a lot of mixed opinions here, both are good cards, both have their strengths and weakness...after all it's your $
rawr...my 7800GT does 526/1215 on stock. Evga for the win I suppose.Originally posted by: Elfear

I don't think ATI (or their vendors) are using the screwy cores for the X1800XLs anymore (heard somewhere they never did). Check out all the X1800XL results over at Xtreme sometime. I know they're not what every joe shmoe is going to achieve but it shows the potential of these cards. Most GTs that I've seen generally top out at 470-500 on the core and 1100-1200 on the memory without resorting to voltmods. From what I've read it looks like 600 on the core and 1400 on the memory isn't hard at all for the X1800XLs, and at those speeds it would beat a 7800GT at 485/1150 (if you average out results of 7800GT owners).
Agreed. Flip a coin.
But these facts should be considered:
1)The 7800GT is slightly faster than the X1800XL (but much faster in OpenGL games like Chronicle of riddick, Pacific fighters, and AOE3 while the XL is abit faster in Farcry, SC CT, BF2)
2)The GT is alot cooler, consumes less power compared to the XL.
3)Both are single slot.
4)The X1800XL will give you a better AF in terms of HQ AF (angle indepedent). But still the 7800GT will give you a better AA IQ (TR/SSAA) compared to ATi.
5)Both will give you dual GPU upgrade option in terms of SLI for NV and Crossfire for XL, but SLi will be alot more cheaper compared to crossfire. (Xl can only be crossfired using the X1800XT CF)
6)Drivers from both teams are up to high standard.
7)Digital Vibrance for both cards.
8)Pure Video/AVIVO. AVIVO is better compared to pure video but pure video has a feature than gets rid of ghosting on your LCD monitor. Both provide excellent quality DVD playback.
9)Both cards are OCable.
10)Some XLs are known to be using faulty XT cores, but fear not as most XLs use the new fixed cores.
My 2 cents
