My new system has plunty of fans and really runs cool except the graphics card. My processor runs at 44C at load and motherboard at 34C.

My ATI x1800xl aiw runs at 64C idle and 81-83C on large load. Is this normal???

I have older cards and they never run this hot, is this just the way the new cards run or is it defective???

My XL idles at 47ºC at the moment, and around 50ºC when my room temperature is warmer. Its load temperature is usually between 55ºC to 65ºC depending on how intensive the graphics settings are.

That's on the reference air cooling solution.

I believe you have an over-heat issue indeed. More than 55ºC idle isn't normal. Something is wrong somewhere. Or your room temperature is perhaps simply too hot, or maybe your in-chassis air-flow is bad. Quite a few things could cause such idling temperatures.

I'd suggest you to get a good third party / aftermarket air cooler, such as the Zalman VF700-ALcu. And see if it helps.

Was wondering if the temp readout is accurate, I am using ATI catalyst control center for my temp readout. Is this what everyone else uses?

Have you upgraded to the newest version? I remember when these cards first came out, the version of CCC that came with them was reporting temps incorrectly.

Just looked at my girlfriend's stock hp with the ATI CCC and the ATI 9600xl in that reads at 37C and 40 under load. Definately not room temp.

I have 5 fans, two (80mm) which suck air from front and shoot straight at vid card. I think temps for motherboard and CPU are good, do those seem high?Cooling should not be the issue.

Could the card be defective? Could the fan have went down on it, how could I check???
