Nvidia nails R520XT with 512MB 7800 GTX

It's Ultra you know but we call it GTX

NVIDIA'S UPCOMING Geforce 7800 GTX 512 MB version is going to be one heck of a card.

This card really looks great and we managed to confirm the data that we wrote about it yesterday. You can find that here.

We still don?t know the price of this card but it really puts ATI's Radeon X1800XT in a very hard position. This card is competing well versus old Geforce 7800GTX with 256MB of memory clocked at 430MHz core and 1200MHz but I don?t think that R520, Radeon X1800XT has much chance against 550MHz core and 1800MHz memory. Nvidia got it right this time and just nailed ATI.

Nvidia misdirected us trying to sell the story to its partners that there won't be any G70 Ultra but what the company did is just renamed this project to Geforce 7800 GTX 512MB and decided to stick with the same name. Nvidia already did this when renaming NV47 to G70, and in the end we learned that we are talking about the same chip all the time. So Geforce 7800 GTX 512 MB is what we used to call the 7800 Ultra and it has every sign to be very fast. It was a sneaky move from Nvidia but never mind, as long as it takes Nvidia back to the performance crown. This time we are not talking about a frame here and there, we are expecting a massive performance lead.

But will it upset current 7800 GTX 256 MB owners? It sure will but this was the only way that it could play it I guess. It will be fun to play with this card once it's out and we expect it will be the fastest card. A new king is coming. µ

ATI has 3 ways to respond to this.

Cut prices by ~$100 on 1800XL and 1800XT
Realease a x1800xt PE ~(725/1600)
Get the 580 out asap.

get the 580 out asap would be nice. R520 is a little late to the game to do much damage

Well, how much of a response is needed depends quite a bit on the price (and availability) of this card. If it costs $700 and you can barely get them, the overall impact of a 550/1800 7800GTX"Ultra" will be pretty small.

If NVIDIA somehow (and idiotically, from a short-term-profit perspective) floods the market with $499-MSRP cards that outperform what's selling today for close to $600 street by 10-20%, ATI is not gonna sell a lot of X1800XTs unless they slash prices. I find this situation unlikely, however. I mean, I'd love it, since it would lower prices, but it just seems unlikely.

I'm sure ATI is trying to get R580 out as soon as they can, but hardware design and manufacturing are not easy to 'hurry up'. They've supposedly resolved the manufacturing issues they were having with the R520, so maybe that means R580 will hit on or ahead of schedule.

Yes it does. You have to manually edit the config file. How do you think people are running 1920 resolutions and what not.

As for the article, ok, so are they just going to tell us that they confirmed this. No proof or anything? Now i believe this new card more than before, but still there is huge doubt in my mind. All in all ill believe it when i see it released.

Imagine the power that sucker is going to consume if it is real :Q

My god... twice the memory, 50% increase in memory speed, 28% core? I'm guessing they are gonna want $600+ for this sucker.

Huh...if the brand is EVGA what does the retailer have anything to do with the step-up program.

I hope it comes out SOON because it's only been 2 days since I sold my evga GTX KO's and I already miss them. 😛 Got the money saved and waiting for 2 of these bad boys. I really hope the 512MB GTX's will be clocked at 550/1800. That's a lot more than I had hoped for. Can't wait to see some benchmarks! Thanks Rollo for the advice.

Am I missing something? Where's the confirmation? All I see is an article from the Inquirer rumor mill, and it doesn't even mention clock speeds.

Umm yeah it says the aforementioned clockspeeds were correct. (550 Core 1800 Memory)

As for the proof, yeah i agree with ya (for once 😉). I asked the same question. Ok so they have proof...are we, us puny little people, allowed to see such a thing?

Yeah it's funny how some people are taking INQ's word as gospel all of the sudden. I'd wait until nVidia or a reputable source like Anandtech makes an announcement with firm specs, price and release date before getting my panties wet. Until then it's just FUD. I guess I could start a thread proclaiming I have inside information on an X1800XT PE that will run at 700/900 mhz and it will slaughter the rumored 512 MB GTX and then pass the story on to the INQ as well. Hmm that gives me an idea, maybe I should post some fake graphs and a story on my clan site again, make it look all legit and then send the link to INQ. 😀

yea im deff selling my 7800GTX and getting two of these 😀 that card should be a great deal better then the 7800GTX.
