X1800 drivers will not install, "device cannot start" error

Ever sense I got my X1800XT, things have gone downhill. Actually, I just lied. Things at first were fantastic; Half Life 2 played and looked better than it ever had, and the PE BIOS successfully flashed with no problem at all. The 5.13 beta drivers worked great, and I properly updated them to the WHQL version when they came out.

Yesterday things started going bad, when the H.264 decoder came out and turned out to cost $15. I downloaded the trial and coulding get it to work. Later last night, I also tried the X1k Transcode utility... it claimed I didn't have a X1k video card and didn' work! Then Battlefield 2 started having errors, athough it did the same thing with my 6600GT and is a buggy game in general... Then some of my games would not install, claiming some files on the CDs were corrupt.

Meh, those things were oddities,no big deal. But today, my video card suddenly declassified itself as a display adapter and was listed as an "Unknown Device" in display manager. (Radeon X1800 series and Radeon X1800 Secondary) When things started getting weird, I simply uninstalled the driver and CCC, then used Driver Cleaner Pro and rebooted. I went to reinstall the driver... and it didn't. Whenever I try to run the Catalyst 5.13 installer, it gets to "ATI Display Driver" and just stares at me. Nothing comes up, then it closes and does the same with the WMD or whatever it is driver. It ends with CCC, none of them seem to install, although it tells me to reboot anyway.

I check device manager, and see Radeon X1800 series listed under Unknown Devices like before, only now with a "!" mark and an error code 10: "divce cannot start". Curiously, Radeon X1800 Series Secondary is just fine.

What on earth could be going on here?

Can you reinstall the chipset driver, then try the graphics card driver.
Anything in event log?
If there is anything that corresponded to the time when things went poo for you, then include SOURCE, EVENT ID, and any TEXT description there might be.

Alright, Chipset driver was uninstalled, cleaned, and I installed 6.70.

Now the ATI drive goes fine, until halfway though CCC installation where I get "internal error 2753 atishlx.exe" and it shuts down.

It's a Windows Installer error of some type, right? What do I do to fix that?

EDIT: Well, I got nothing. A google search turned up help topics on Norton and Adobe installations with the same error code; all have to do with overwriting a pre-existing installation. I already used Driver Cleaner, but I also went into the registry and manual obliterated anything and everything that had to do with CCC. I still get the same error.

Now I have a Code 19 error listed for both entries in the device manager... Go figure.

Hi,
Can you look in event viewer, look up the logged event, and provide the SOURCE, EVENT ID, and the whole TEXT description.

Um... which event exactly am I looking for? I'm not sure what it was that caused this or when, other than this afternoon.

Now the 5.13 installation skips every install, even CCC. The background pop up, then goes away, and moves to the next one.

If I try to run CCC manually, it cannot find CLI.exe.

Popped my 6600GT back in, it worked fine though I didn't bother fully installing the drivers. Popped the X1800XT back in and it still "cannot start".

Well, I reformatted. Drivers installed just fine. CLI.exe has an error when it comes up, so no CCC, but some people might consider that a good thing. Regardless, I'm sure it'll sort itself out.

Make sure you have .net runtime 1.1 installed.

Go here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Download and install it and clear out that CCC entry that won't go away from add/remove programs. This fixed my problem which was IDENTICAL to yours.

Hope that helps ya! :)

YIKES!!! Just realized my sig is wildly outdated.......now corrected.
