X1650Pro or 7600GS

I am looking to make the final upgrade to my rig. It is meant to last until next fall, where I will relegate it audio workstation in my new studio 🙂

Right now, I use it for multiple purposes, coding, office work, picture editing, music creating and games. It is of course because of the games I want to upgrade.

OK, my current specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
2 Gb RAM
6600GT
300 + 80 Gb HDDs

I realize this will not make a lean, mean gaming machine, but I am still a student and thus under a tight budget.

I have narrowed my choices to an X1650Pro, or the slightly cheaper 7600GS. Which one would you guys prefer?

are you looking for AGP or PCI-e? personally I wouldnt bother as neither of those cards are a huge upgrade. How much are you looking to spend - about $75-$100? the upgrade I would make, if any at this point would be an x1950 pro - but those are about 150-180 depending on pci-e vs agp. So I would save my money for your next system.

Do you mind used? perhaps you can find something like an x800 class card or a 7800/7900 card that fits your budget and would be a good upgrade

Look at some benchmarks but I don't think you will notice much improvement. I say save your money. But if you really have to buy something, which I don't think you should again, get teh X1650 Pro cause I know the 7600GS is about the same as a 6600GT. Then again the X1650 Pro could be too, I have forgotten what benchmarks look like.

But you should google some benchmarks if you really have to buy something. which again, I don't think you do. Just save your money if you can't afford better right now.
