AT shows a P4 3.6 getting beat by a A64 3000+ at HL2? I'm sort of doubting your 3.3 GHz P4 is somehow magically equivalent to a 3200+?

$139 3000+

Like I said Apoppin', you're obviously not a gamer if you're hanging onto the P4 2.8 like grim death, so I think you should buy a X1600XT. I like that idea a lot actually, it would be a BIG upgrade for you! Think of teh AVIVO smackdown!

I don't think you should wait even ONE DAY to buy the AGP X1600XT when it's released, it might be a limited run and you don't want to miss out on the 128 bit AGP goodness!

I would'nt be recommending a Socket 754 Platform at this point in the game. Thats worse than staying with AGP AND "up-grading" to A64. Although I do agree the X1600XT is a dissapointment to me as a Med-Hardcore gammer and I would never want one, if it fits the budget and a needs of a particular person, its good enough.

I'm not really recommending a S754, just trying to say even REALLY CHEAP A64s walk all over sadly pathetic Intel CPUs.

:D

the x1600xt is a great little card that BEATS its competition - the 6600GT - at a lower price . . . and a noticeable UPgrade over my 9800xt . . . a cheap "bang-for-buck" card . . . that'll give new "life" to my system for games another year . . .

the only think i might wait for is the x1650xt on r580 [depending on if my 9800xt is fried - or not . . . i think it might be something else ]

Meh.

Your post is all FUD.

No matter what percent of the market still has AGP, doesn't change the fact that PCIE gives more choices and FAR better value. (not to mention dwindling market/value of AGP antiques)

You say the X1600XT is cheaper than the 6600GT, when it is not. The AGP 6600GT is $119 AMIR and In Stock at newegg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130220
Last I checked, $119 is FAR CHEAPER than ANY X1600XT, let alone a non existent AGP one.

And of course you totally ignored the 6800NU AGP that can be had at newegg for $20 more, and perhaps unlocked and OCd into a much faster card.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814140067
Funny how you forget these "little" details.

Or the 6800XT that's $20 less at newegg, and still a better card than a 6600GT?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121206
Another forgotten "detail".

I think I know why you're all about ATI Apoppin'. They're kind of like Intel- they ratchet the speed on worse engineered processors to achieve similar performance. ;)

[/quote]

All of your posts in this thread are FUD

:D

so now - according to you - Intel sucks . . . along with ATi :p

Why am i not surprized to hear this from THE nVidia forum Fanboy?

i said the x1600xt is faster than the 6600gt and is its "competition". . . . the MSRP of the x1600xt is lower than the 6600gt . . . PLUS the FEATURES of the ATI card are are better - plus . . . i won't have to pay for "Pure Video"['s equivalent] with the ATi card [isn't that worth $20?] The 6800std isn't much better than the 6600gt for $179 . . . how IS 'Apollo', anyway?

Now you want me to deal with MIRs? . . . and "unlocking and o/c'ing"? i thought you were against that? i guess it "depends" on what you are trying to sell from the nVidia store. :p

What i am interested in is AGP:

1) 6800GT - a really nice capable card . . . if it falls to that $250 price point i would definitely be tempted and probably go for it. i THOUGHT they were a LOT more expensive [they were] and i DO thank-you - Rollo- for pointing that out . . .
Here's the cheapest i can find - YOUR link - which is about $310 shipped to me . . . still a little pricey. . . and OOS:
eVGA 256-A8-N344-AX Geforce 6800GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail

2)x1600xt . . . because it is cheap and a decent performer - ahead of the 6600gt with really nice features . . . i'd get it now - in a heartbeat for $159 - if were available now . . .
edited.

so i am waiting . . . i think i'll troubleshoot my current card. ;)

Good Lord.

I swear the criteria for Elite these days must be "most smileys".

Apoppin' I truly think you should buy a X1600XT AGP. At this point, I'd almost buy you one myself.

there is [evidently] No criteria for Elite . . . [after-all] they let me in . . . perhaps we should start a F.I. campaign for you: Rollo for Elite

Got any extra 6800gts in AGP lying around?

:D

that would be my first choice . . . IF i cared to spend over $300 :p . . .

if the 1600xt is out soon at or near $160 in AGP, i'm on it
[maybe ATI will send me a "free" one if i Hype their product enough]

i am gonna [troubleshoot my card] and wait a bit . . . i am at the Final Battle in Serious Sam2 and really don't care if i finish it - now. . . . i will be on the lookout for a Hot Deal in AGP [ati OR nVidia] and my credit card is in my sweaty hand.

Happy Holidays

You can get a 6800GS for $200 Retail.

I would suggest the 6800GS over the X1600 all day long. Considering a non "bulk" 1600 is only around $30 less than the GS.
me too!!!

i'd LOVE a 6800GS in AGP . . .

WHERE?

my cc is in my hand now . . . i'll buy it tonight if you can link me to one @$200

edit: you linked to a 6600GT in PCIe . . . i need an agp card. ;)

Is there a X1600 in AGP? The link at the top of the page was to a PCIe card so I thought that's what we were talking about.

OK how about a 6800XT for $139

thank-you for your suggestions

yes, the x1600xt is announced for AGP but not yet available . . . GeCube made the announcement at the beginning of this month . . . other companies have it on their pages.

i hate to say this but isn't the 6800xt scraping nVidia's barrel? i may be way wrong, but i thought it was basically an unlockable [8-pipe/128MB vRAM] and crippled 6800std about on a par with the 6600Gt [more-or-less]?

the 6800GS performance is more what i'd like and i would be glad to pay that $60 difference between it and the XT . . .

ANYway, does anyone have comparisons between the 6800GS/XT and x1600xt?

edit: I found the AT comparison of the 6800GS kicking 6600GT butt . . . but no 6800xt comparison.

Perhaps, but you apparently don't know CPUs and gaming if you think an OCd P4 2.8 is the equivalent of a A64 3200+ at gaming.

Or that what is wasteful is spending money on a crappy X1600XT that offers little improvement when you should be moving into this century.

Rollo you and I will disagree here (suprise). As my desktop (P4 3.2 )is used for the family for work, pics, video and audio encoding its not a gaming machine - but it can play games just fine on my 19in 1280x1024 LCD. My threshold for FPS and eyecandy are much lower than yours so I don't need an X2 and SLI'd GTXs. A P4 and x1600xt would be fine and more cost effective overall for my needs - not yours.

If I wanted a high end rig I would definately come to you for advice but for now your "upgrade that stinkin pile of AGP horse manure" advice sucks ;)

I didn't say you needed an X2 and GTXs, I said for most people now an AGP card is a bad investment. Given your computer and needs, for you I'd say it's a good investment.

For GAMERS:

Anyone with an AGP motherboard and an A64- should switch motherboards and have a wider selection of better value cards.

Anyone with an AGP motherboard and an AXP processor- should be Ebaying both to offset cost of A64 motherboard, as AXP is feeble.

Anyone with a <3.0GHz P4 on AGP-should be Ebaying both to offset cost of A64 motherboard, as <3.0GHz P4 is feeble.

Anyone with a >3GHz P4 and a low end AGP card like a 9600XT, could conceivably get their "best value" from a new AGP card.

All I've been trying to point out in this thread is:
1. AGP is dead, for most, buying AGP these days is a waste.
2. X1600XTs are a really weak card, that I can't imagine buying for a gaming rig in the era of games like FEAR and COD2. "Hurray! I can play at 800X600 0X0X medium details!"
Who could be happy with that? (besides Apoppin- who I've already said should buy this card when it comes available.)

Now these are good points, and a much better post than your previous ones. Read those and then read this, and see the difference in tone/attitude.

For those mentioning the 6800XT, I'd stay away. One of my coworkers was somehow convinced that 6800xt=6800LE with a new name. He bought 3 hoping to unlock all of them and sell 2. None of them unlocked all the way to 16/6. Only 1 can actually unlock to 12/6 without major problems. The other 2 are stuck at 8/4. I guess it's still a decent deal for the price, but I'd rather go with an even cheaper 6600GT and OC the crap out of it.

damn . . . why didn't you just post that instead of all the extra singing and dancing in "Rollos' FUD Opera"?
:p

:D

1. AGP IS "dead" as a future path . . . agreed
2. The x1600xt IS a "weak" card - compared with the x1800xt and 7800GTX . . . but not with older cards like my 9800xt or even its competition - the 6600GT/6800std . . . it will run FEAR at 10x7 with no problems and with decent detail.

Who could be happy with the x1600xt? those looking for a CHEAP and full-featured card ;)

of course, i'd be happier with a 6800GT/GS

still looking . . . . and waiting . . . for that Hot Deal.

news

GeCube launches X1300 and X1600 for AGP

quoted in part:
. . . one of largest ATi partners is finally coming out with products of X1000 range in AGP flavour, just in time for Yule sale madness.

Both X1300 and X1600 use very similar PCB, so GeCube slapped two GPU's on the very same AGP PCB and shipped them out. The simple named GC-RX1600PGA2-D3 is actually an RV530 based product, clocked at 500MHz for GPU core, while GC-RX1300GA2-D3 is an RV515LE based product, with the core running at 450MHz. Both boards come with 256MB of same DDR-II memory, but with different clocks on each board.

The X1600 product features two DVI outputs, while X1300 comes in more of a classical D-Sub+DVI combo. Also, X1600 core is being cooled by a fan and a copper heatsink, X1300 is cooled by a smaller fan&aluminium heatsink combo. Since these 90nano chips suck more power than measily 35W that AGP slot can provide, we have seen "Return of The Molex"
. . .

Prices are expected to be just a tad higher than the PCIe counterparts, but there is no doubt there is plenty of room on the market.

Did we mention that the products support AVIVO and dominATIon marchitectures?

in time for X-mas and just a little more then $159.

edit:

Thex1700xt looks nice
The RV530 core was thoroughly modified in order to increase the performance, so it's no wonder the company has decided to call it X1700.
