i got all four yanked at once. when i finally came out of the anesthesia i went home and conked out for hours. i eventually got up later that nite and ate some very very soft rice porridge my mom made.

the next day most of my swelling was gone, and by the third day i looked normal. i didn't need any pain meds or anything.

my oral surgeon ROCKS.

Buncha wussies...

When I had my wisdom teeth out in basic training (see my previous post above), I got NO pain meds to take afterwards. I was allowed to take asprin or tylenol. That's it.

And to tell you the truth, it wasn't that bad. I was pretty much normal after three or four days.

all four out at the same time.
they knocked me out complete basically the whole day (even after the surgery) with the shot.
you don't really feel anything wrong except 4 holes in the back of your mouth.

<< Potential complications of tooth extraction include postoperative infection, temporary numbness from nerve irritation, jaw fracture, and jaw joint pain. An additional complication is called dry socket. When a blood clot does not properly form in the empty tooth socket, the bone beneath the socket is painfully exposed to air and food, and the extraction site heals more slowly. >>

About the syringe. Use warm (not hot) water and gently squirt it into the holes. It doesn't hurt, and if you are doing it right, you'll feel chunks of food and gunk getting blasted out of there.

I had mine pulled last december. Two were impacted, two were already sticking out. The impacted ones were the fun ones to get out, naturally. I only had novocaine, and they prescribed 800mg advil for afterwards. I only ended up taking one pill. The bleeding stopped withing 24 hours. I think I definitely had one of the better experiences.

All four of my wisdom teeth were pulled after Christmas, and I was eating solid food for dinner that night.
I went for local anesthetic, it may make for a faster recovery. It really wasn't THAT bad having my teeth pulled while awake, just kinda scary:)

<<how'd you deal with the pain w/o the pain meds>>

It wasn't so bad. I just never really needed them. I did get a little throbbing when the swelling meds would start to wear off, but I think that was just pressure from swelling. I had chipmunk cheeks for a bit afterwards. :Q

I got mine out in November 2000. The side-effects of the anesthesia are far worse than the extraction itself.

I haven't had to have mine removed yet.

So far I think I'm going to be able to keep them if nothing changes.

well, the anestesia has definitely worn off and it's bugging me a bit, but not extremely painful; read: didn't take painkillers yet :D. been taking the antibiotics for a while now and spitting out and replacing the gauze (the first one was freakiest, whole buncha pus in there too :/). still bleeding a bit too, but not as much.

<< lol... i think you guys were in it for the painkillers... >>

yeah, i keep reading that you guys had the most euphoric time doing this... maybe i'll have better luck with the other side ;) hahaha

<< The side-effects of the anesthesia are far worse than the extraction itself >>

not really... at least speaking for myself...

freesia39 - are you chinese? my mom made that stuff for me as well, but i opted for eating it tomorrow when the swelling and the bleeding has gone down even more.

AmusedOne - after your experience, i'm almost glad i never signed up to go the the army ;)

vi_edit - can't say i have a syringe to squirt into the holes. hmm... i just had a little ice cream today... shouldn't be much of a problem, no?

Cat - how many teeth did they take out for you to be eating solid food the night after the extraction! :Q

Blayze - seriously, it's not that bad at all... if they are growing out the wrong way, don't be afraid of taking them out.

Naw, it wasn't that bad. Actually, I think having to go back in training the next day helped me (except PT, I got out of that the next day). Getting off your duff and doing things makes you heal faster, and you don't dwell on the pain or being uncomfortable.

I still remember the time I had my wisdom teeth pulled out, 4 at once too, after that I think I lost something like 10lb in 4 days, definitely not fun.

I think I am lucky.. I had my wisdom teeth pulled all 4 of them 2 for one week.. the other 2 a week after.. I had no trouble eating and I don't even remember it hurts.. I just remember the sound from the tools during the operation

this is very painfull and can occur from drinking with a straw, this is where the clot/packing where the extracted tooth was becomes dislodged and open again. OUCH !!!
I had teeth pulled 3 times and had 1 dry socket and omg, oooooooo the pain :(

tim0thy, it's not so much right now that you have to worry about using the syringe; it's more important after you have the stitches removed and you have a couple big gaping holes back there. It's at that point that food gets caught back in there. Also at this point you will be eating more solid foods that have a higher chance of getting caught back there.

You can pick up these little syringes for a buck or two from a pharmacy, or just ask your dentist for one. He should throw one in for free.

If the dentist is good, the unstitching isn't bad at all. If the dentist did the stitches right, s/he can just cut the knot and then give it a tug and the stich will pull right out.

Some dentists have gone to disolving stitches as well.

BTW - I know a lot of this stuff because a) I've had 3 wisdom teeth extract, and b) my Mom helped with it because she worked in a dentist office for 25 years :)
