I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at the same time. As I recall, I went to a college party later that day, partied 'til dawn. Possibly the booze and pleasant female companion made me forget about the pain.

hmm...booze would've made the wound heal slower no? :D

I've had 2 extractions and my experience is 1 good, 1 sux0r

the 1st one was very quick and painless...the second one is another story...the teeth was partially mature therefore, more force, multiple shots, and 5 minutes of physical extraction time :Q ouch! Plus the dumb dentist stitched the wound a little deeper and caused about a week of discomfort.

lesson to be learned?

1. make sure your teeth is completely out before you get an extraction.
2. make sure the dentist uses extreme caution when stitching the wound...otherwise, you'll experience some discomfort days after the operation.
3. make sure you got enough sleep the night before the extraction...more sleep = healthier gums = cleaner extractions.

there, hope someone learns from my experience :D

hm, guess i got a good dental surgeon:p

mine were still under the bone:) I went local since recovery is faster and stuff. had 2 lowers out, 2 shots each. after that, no pain at all:p Funny how getting teeth yanked is less painful then drilling for cavities. anyhow, the guy had to cut flaps in my gums, then use a small buzz saw to cut away the bone over the tooth. tooth extraction was like 3 seconds after that:p didn't feel a damned thing... weird. fear factor is pretty high though, i was like wtf a buzz saw? hehe

and yea, good dentists use disolving stiches:)

<< tim0thy, it's not so much right now that you have to worry about using the syringe; it's more important after you have the stitches removed and you have a couple big gaping holes back there. It's at that point that food gets caught back in there. Also at this point you will be eating more solid foods that have a higher chance of getting caught back there.

You can pick up these little syringes for a buck or two from a pharmacy, or just ask your dentist for one. He should throw one in for free.
>>

gotcha, i actually won't have to go back to my dentist because he used dissolving stitches. i just spit up another piece of gauze and i can't believe i'm still bleeding (at least the upper one is)... i barely ate anything since it's kinda sore to eat...

hehe... funny how the lowers don't come out... since he had to do the exact same as you described to mine. fear factor is indeed very high and that saw scared the bejesus out of me :Q! fortunately, anestesia was working and i didn't feel a thing... but that smell of the cutting was kinda funky. :D

Holy sh1t, all this talk about yanking teeth is seriously weirding me out. I don't think i have my wisdom teeth... i can't remember if they were yanked when i was younger or not. There seems to be space in the back where some teeth could fit but i dunno. Maybe they haven't come in yet. What age do they usually pop out?

I have a question about Wisdom teeth maybe you guys can help me out. Hopefully this won't sound racist, it's not my intention at all. Awhile ago in college I think a Professor told are class that a very, very high percent of Black's do not need to have there wisdom teeth out, because they evolved less than others. Again I this isn't meant to be racist, just wondering if he was right or was full of sh*t.

I really doubt it has anything to do with evolution... just if there's room or not for the wisdom teeth... if there is, then they don't need to be pulled out, but if there isn't, then they do. Fortunately with me i had plenty of space, so i never got mine out.

The bottom wisdom teeth are MUCH harder to pull out because your jawbone is directly behind them. It makes it hard for the dentist to get an angle on them, as well as giving the dentist less room to work with. 99% of impacted wisdom teeth are on the bottom.

The top ones are a breeze because your jaw is relatively straight up top and is pretty open as well.

I haven't had my wisdom teeth pulled out. At first I was freaked out with what my Parents went through. Now I'm even more freaked out with your stories! ACK! :frown:

If I *ever* have them pulled out, I think I'm going to opt for my dentist to pull all 4 out (having two pulled out first, then two later sounds more painful to me). I've just been so careful with my teeth that I've only had one small filing done my whole life.

BTW no one ever mentioned the cost of having your wisdom teeth pulled out... What's the current "rate" nowadays?

LostHiWay, in some kind of way you could indeed say that people in Africa are less 'evolved' than those in other parts of the world. Maybe it would be more appropriate to say that they've evolved differently.

Anyway, the reason why wisdom teeth need to be pulled by so many people is because during evolution, the jaw 'shrunk', thereby leaving less room for teeth. If you take a look at skulls from earlier Humanoids, you'll see that they've larger jaws than current Humans.

Because we Humans cook our food, and there's no need for large amounts of teeth and powerful jaws, the muscles of the jaws decreased in size and the size (and thickness) of the jaws decreased too. Since the number of teeth stayed the same during that time but the space decreased, it just doesn't fit anymore.

To come back on the reason why 'black' people don't need to have teeth pulled so often: because the Humans in Africa have been isolated from other parts of the world for a very long time, they evolved differently. Unlike by Humans in other populations, the size of their jaws didn't decrease that fast, or it started much later. So they've larger jaws, which means more space for their teeth and less visits to the dentist to have some teeth pulled because of overcrowding.

first of all, i just wanted to thank everyone that posted and helped me through all the uncertainty i had with this procedure.

vi_edit, thanks for dispelling all the words of advice and what i should do to prevent infection and dry sockets. (you deserve a 10 rating in your profile... thanks)

Aihyah, hope your sister has a speedy recovery as i don't need to use the guaze anymore. :)

AmusedOne, johneetrash, thraashman, SammySon, thanks for your stories... they were pretty funny, well, at least i thought they were. :D

freesia39, i hope to be eating "jook" tonight.

=====

for all of you that are going to have your wisdom teeth extracted, you should definitely not avoid this, because if they are impacted, they WILL BECOME a problem later. should talk to your dentist about when the best time to have these removed as it took about three cleanings before we decided to have these suckers extracted.

the local anestesia used was fine. no pain was felt, the only pain you will feel is the needle being stuck in your gum in the beginning and that's nothing... when they extract, you will feel pressure from the dentist pulling the tooth out. the bottom molar will usually need to be cut up into pieces to ease the job of extraction. ask your dentist to save your teeth. :)

generally, dentists can only administer local anestesia unless your go to an oral surgeon (they got the "good stuff") ;).

=====

Good luck on your extraction in the future, Deeko, dparker, Alienwho.

RaDragon, my dentist charged me 350$/tooth. my insurance from my company will cover most of the cost though, else it can be expensive.

Suicidal, i think wisdom teeth comes out anytime after 18. you should check with your dentist when they check your x-ray.

kaiotes, don't worry and get it done if your dentist advises it. it's better to be a little sore now than in pain later.

=====

now i get to look forward to this in a month when i have my left side taken out :(:X:)

I've got one more piece of advice - try avoiding acidic drinks such as pop and orange juice. The acid in the drink will dissolve the clots and the stitches prematurely.
