Lets just say I saw the thread title and was ready to organize a committe to ensure the OP gets a groin punch if the content did not involve a press release that a revision to this awesome property was announced.

So, who has the OPs address?

Very misleading.. I think a temp-ban along with a few groin punches is in order here

Kind of random question but when you say X-wing vs. Tie Fighter, do you really mean the multi-player focused game? Or are you more referring to the individual story-based X-wing and Tie Fighter games?

I played a lot of XvT online (made Jedi master or whatever the highest rank was a few times) but in terms of PvP combat, looking back at it, it wasn't particularly good. Basically at the higher levels of play both players would point at each other, accelerate, oscillate up and down and shoot when the other player was in range / in their sights.

Ships with shields had a huge advantage (beyond the obvious soaking of hits) in that you could charge them up and then redirect the extra energy to weapons and engines. Ships w/ ion cannons also had a big advantage because you could rapidly toggle between the weapons to do twice as much damage.

That being said, I do think a remake could be a lot of fun, especially if there was some kind of "competitive co-op" mode where you worked together with a team to achieve an objective while the other team tries to stop you (escort mission, fleet engagement, capture a neutral ship).

I'd rather have the original X-Wing, not dumbed down or casualized.

So many great nights of playing that game; my buddy and I would switch off flying, while the other person took care of the power levels for shields, engines, and weapons.

I saw Star Wars when it was released when I was 7 years old at a drive in theater, and it blew me away. No other Star Wars game has ever come close to making me feel like I was a part of that universe.

Still have the original game on floppies in the original box... been thinking of putting together an old 286 system specifically for that game.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw the thread title -- it seemed to elude to the fact there was an announcement.

No announcement --> OP should be shot.

I fondly remember creating my own missions for XvT. Great times. Great game.

Except it was designed as an arcade like game with minimal similarities with how the older games played.

Disney should release updated versions of X-Wing & Tie Fighter.

Updated GFX & sound, keep the EXACT same physics and don't touch it, sell millions of copies. Win! X-Wing & Tie Fighter Remastered. There Disney -- thank me later.

That was all in XvT actually (within reason for computers of the 1990s). There were several missions that multiple players could participate in cooperatively or adversarially.

X-Wing Alliance was good. It runs in Direct3D and scales well at many resolutions. Unfortunately I couldnt get it working in Win98 or Win2000 mode inside XP or Vista or Win7.
And I dont know how to VM so basically, I am shit out of luck.

Ah I guess that's possible and I could never find a group for it. I remember it using some terrible microsoft matchmaking system and I usually ended up having to hang out in IRC and find people to play with.

I only played X-Wing, loved it! but my computer couldn't handle the last battles against the Star Destroyer, it was basically a slide show.

I hear XWing vs. Tie Fighter was even better, but never got to try it.

X-Wing and TIE Fighter did get an update with the XvT engine back in, oh, 1998 I want to say. X-Wing Alliance was great too, even if it was near impossible to beat the Death Star tunnel run without cheats.

I think most fans have been wanting a true sequel with modern graphics for a long time. Lawrence Holland and Totally Games have pretty much vanished off the map though. I think it was after Alien Syndrome bombed. Though apparently they're still in business, I have no idea if they're working on anything.
