X-Wing vs Tie-Fighter!

X-Wing and TIE Fighter did get an update with the XvT engine back in, oh, 1998 I want to say. X-Wing Alliance was great too, even if it was near impossible to beat the Death Star tunnel run without cheats.

That was impossible? I beat it a bunch of times without hacks.

Man I loved some of the missions in that game. The one where the ISD is chasing you through the asteroid field was a favorite.

Perhaps I should rephrase that and say it was impossible for me. ^_^

I have that on my shelf, along with the original boxes and media for XvT and X-Wing Alliance. I love those games, but a new version would need to remain true to the originals and not dumbed down. So in other words, it will never happen. The most hilarious thing about XvT was that if you got one of the first run copies, there was a note in the box apologizing for the fact that they mislabeled the CDs! 😀

At least XWA had a devoted community that is releasing model updates and still runs on modern operating systems.

Tie Fighter was so much fun. So many awesome hours playing that game.

Didn't they have one mission that was essentially impossible though? Where you're set up into a trap, and endless mines are shooting missiles at you? Couldn't figure out how to beat that.

I remember that one. You really had to sharpen your shooting skills to get all the mines in time.

I used to have those games!

It's the MMO age, don't we all want something like that but with everything player controlled? Even the StarDestroyers themselves?

it will happen at some point
...but my hopes are very low. Even star citizen is suffering from money grabbing bloat. gone are the days of legit games. everything must have unlocks, dlc, etc......

i think the xvt sphere would be just wayyy to susceptible to these annoying marketing scams if its released or worked on now

Galaxies came pretty close with some of the larger ships like the Nova Cruiser and the mining ship, but they never got around to capital ships like the planned. We did have a lot of fun having multiple people crew those ships during combat. 🙂

Can't you just use DosBOX to install the games nowadays?

I've got the CD's for Xwing, and Tie fighter in a bookshelf somewhere. I also have Xwing alliance. I played xwing alliance like 5 times through before I realized that all the graphical settings were super low by default. That game actually doesn't look half bad by today's standards if you crank everything up.

For the life of me, I can't get X-Wing Alliance running on a modern machine... I have an old P4 with a Voodoo3 video card but I think I need to downgrade the OS from XP to Win98SE for better results...

I had it running on Windows 7 x64 but haven't tried to install it on my new 8.1 x64 load yet. This site may be able to help you:

The site I linked above has graphical updates (and other hacks for the game) which greatly enhance the game.

I think I looked at that page before and the fix was pretty complicated... it'll be worth it to try again though.

I remember going from 320x200 to 640x480... that jump alone was worth the new version of the game!!! 😎

It should work with these installers. I had another problem however: the game discs are just completely unrecognized. Windows acts like there isn't a cd in the tray at all.

In the end I went to a certain Swedish site where the win 7 compatible versions are made available. Worked great but I can't fly for shit with my gamepad (Logitech Dual Action).
