X Refresh Rates

I have defined ranges for both the horizontal sync and vertical refresh in the monitor section of XF86Config-4, and I have set a resolution in the screen section (display subsection). How is it choosing a particular refresh rate when I only defined a range? The man pages mentions built-in VESA modes. If that's it, how can I tell what refresh rate I'm using?

The reason I ask is my monitor keeps shutting down w/ an "HF Out of Range" message. X could run for minutes, hours, or days before this happens. I would like to call tech support, but they will ask what refresh rate I'm using (and I dont know).

I think that the XF86Config-4 format still supported modelines like the old XF86 3.x packages - perhaps you have a modeline listed that is overriding the built-in VESA modes? A new-style XF86Config doesn't have any modeline listings at all, just the two frequency specs and the list of desired resolutions. You might try the new (XF86Config) format and see if that fixes anything up.

Kind of strange, but that's all I can think of...

FYI.. The next version of both RedHat and Mandrake have gui's to set up the res/colors/frequency just like Windows... right click on desktop etc.. I have played with them.. they work just fine.

I think I am using the new format. I don't have any modelines defined.

I'm not using Red Hat's default window/desktop manager (checkout fluxbox.sourceforge.net), so I don't have this right click access. Do you know what these GUI apps are called so I can possibly use them in my setup?
