X Rebirth

It's the one game I'm really looking forward to and will pay full price for if the reviews are decent.
 
X series does look good....but it's not for everyone. It's like single player Eve Online. I actually couldn't get into it due to the sandbox only approach it had. You could sink 100's of hours into it easy. If I was going to do this again, i'd just get back into Eve.

I already deal with spreadsheets IRL, please let this be different. Still have Star Citizen though :wub:

They have been working on this game for awhile now. Glad release is finally official.

If I were you I'd wait for a lot of reviews first. I have a feeling its going to be pretty buggy and not nearly as limitless as the trailers indicate.

Myself its a day one purchase regardless since I am a fan of the series and appreciate what they do.

It's probably the best one of the bunch since it stays in one area and you can get a better idea for what normal gameplay should be like.

This. I picked up the X-series pack a couple years ago when it was on sale, and only was able to spend a few hours in it. I figured if I was going to spend hundreds of hours flying and building ships and exploiting an economy, I might as well do it in EVE with/against real people.

I can understand the draw for someone who prefers to go at his/her own pace or wants to avoid all the metagaming and melodrama of EVE, but for me, playing with/against real people > NPCs.
 
Did some reading on this, and the devs have said the menus will be more streamlined and the controls a little easier to understand. I could never get into X3, the tutorial was terrible at best at explaining the game.
 
The only thing Eve and X have generally in common is that they are both space based and have an economic base. There are numerous gameplay elements that are very different fundamentally.

1. X is twitch based where Eve is point and click. Also, Eve combat is sequential. I'm not saying reflexes don't play a role in Eve because they do in regards to using abilities, but combat in Eve is primarily a numbers game aka wowesqe whereas X requires some hand/eye coordination to land a shot.

2. The virtue of a being single player means that in X a player can be a major economic power (space stations, fleets, etc) in mere days or weeks compared to many months or even years to in Eve for similar achievments. The idea that Eve is an MMO means you'll never get to build economic empires on the same scale as an individual and thus offers a different type of fulfilment.

Those are two but there are others. Anyways this isn't a X versus Eve post as much as showing that it isn't apples and apples.

I agree with SLU though. The fact that it's an X Universe game means that for every cool feature they add there will be a corresponding bug or flaw that will need to be patched out. X has always oozed potential but it rarely meets it fully.

Supposedly this particular X title will have a far better early game but we'll see. I'm definitely going to get it but I'm realistic that the game may potentially be buggy as hell at release.

It's primarily sandbox but there is a story to beat if you choose to persue it. The story is completely optional. Usually people play through the storyline as a way to learn the game and earn money and then explore content.

I've been a fan of the series since the X-Beyond the Frontier. The music and atmosphere created was something amazing. I haven't been able to fully get into the latest X games due to time constraints in my life.

I'm looking forward to this one though and hope it can give me my space fix while I await Star Citizen.

I'm really tired of all the Eve-ngelicals coming into any thread about a space game to preach their religion. We get it, you all think Eve is the measuring stick and the god of every space game ever. Enjoy your spreadsheets in space and stop thread crapping in every single damn game that even mentions anything space related. :colbert:
 
I don't play online games, so Eve etc. are out. Also I always wait for player reviews and for all the bugs to be worked out (patches etc). However, this looks interesting as does Star Citizen and being single player it's a game I may eventually purchase.

It wasn't thread crapping at all. These 2 are very similar. I get the differences, but the fact still remains, they are similar (more so than any other space sim game). That is why the comparison. It certainly wasn't a put down for this game, but it is a distinct difference that needed called out.

For many people these days, (as someone else said), MP > NPC. That's the only reason anyone brings it up because there is much more of a rush.

And well, ya for me, Eve IS the measuring stick. Just like for many of you other games are measuring sticks for other genres. If you think there's another game closer to it than Eve spit it out?

I understand what you're getting at but saying Eve is the measuring stick for X is like saying that World of Warcraft is a measuring stick for Skyrim or every other fantasy based RPG, single player or multiplayer. Just because there are few games to compare it with doesn't mean you can still compare it. Should we compare Minecraft to whatever arbitrary RPG most closely resembers its survival mode?

I disagree with your premise because MMO players expect different things compared to gamers who play single player. In single player games the gamer is by design slightly OP compared to the rest of the world in order to exaggerate progression and accomplishment over a shorter period of time. With an MMO game the gamer is by design balanced out as much as possible with everyone else (all things being equal) and progression is drawn out to entice long term progression (time=money). Eve especially is a good example because you can play 24 hours a day and your skills won't level any faster than someone who plays one hour (assuming no boosts). I realize I'm simplifying things so please don't get offended.

Don't get me wrong though I'm not downplaying Eve's importance. I used to play heavily though now I'm an ex-player. I'm just saying that X has no peer in what it tries to accomplish and that's it's arbitrary to use Eve as a standard to compare it just because they are similar theme wise.

Now if you want to start another thread discussing why Eve is a fraction of what it was 2-3 years and how CCP is starting to suck we can do that. Ok I better go before I get hit with something. 🙂

I gave my opinion of X and why I had that opinion.

As for offended, no, as I haven't played Eve for a few years and yes I've heard it's going downhill.
 
The biggest problem I always found with the X-series is that the combat is just TERRIBLE.

Give it better combat mechanics and it'd pull me back in.

I guess I'm not a space combat vet, so I thought it was passable. Stiff, but passable. It does fall victim to the "bigger ship always wins" routine.

I think I only beat a ship that had me massively outgunned two or three times total during my big X2 game.
 
Looks amazing. All the micro-transactions in Star Citizen seem annoying, so I've been looking forward to this more.

I think combat in X3 is just fine. A single M3 fighter should always lose to a capital ship that was 10 times its cost. OTOH, wing of fighters with the right missiles can take down a big ship.

Also, this game is nothing like Eve. There really isn't any game like the X series.
 
Are the previous ones good? What's the latest? I've never really understood the X series.

Is it like Sins of a Solar Empire? I really like the whole space theme/setting, but haven't found many games in that setting that are actually fun to play.

once they implemented teh stock market, it only took me one day to buy a fleet of capital warships complete with a hangar of fighters/bombers

sorta ruined it :/

X3 Albion Prelude is the latest release. They have nothing in common with Sins. It's a space sim in the style of WC Privateer or Freelancer, except it is predominately sandbox in that you can play the main story but the greatest rewards come from doing your own thing in trade, piracy, manufacturing, etc. There are various side missions you can do.

That said, every release has had rough edges and can take a bit of play before you finally say, "oh, now I get it!" Even then its not for everyone.

X3 Rebirth is meant to be a very refined, optimized version of X3 with a updated interface, improved early game, and a lot of new content including new capital ships and tools. The game was meant to be released last year so I hope the delays translate into a better game.
