well... I wouldn't exactly say its the "real" x-fi (that would be reserved for xtrememusic and up, as this one is missing many features and such), but still a good deal.

actually this is the same x-fi as the xtrememusic and up, minus the xram (the xtremeaudio is the real charlatan of the bunch). but a nice feature is that it also has connectors for the front audio on most cases, unlike the other x-fi versions. this is a good deal for a great gaming soundcard - i got this a month ago and paid $25 more.

Not exactly, its missing digital out and uses lower quality components. Right now there's this big craze of getting the main x-fi cards and switching caps around to turn it into a high quality DAC. Most people get the Xtrememusic, since X-ram is rather worthless. Nothing wrong with the lower profile x-fi cards though if this doesn't matter to you, they are still great solutions depending on your needs.

my x-fi is dell oem and has a digital out. it looks like these are out of the digital for coax digital (unless i am mistaken and the flexijack can be used for that purpose)

it does have digital out (called a "flexijack" or some such) and supports ASIO. i wouldn't be surprised if the card uses lower quality components since it is designed as a budget model, though honestly i looked over all 17 pages of that thread *sigh* and didn't find any specifics or substantiation for the claim.

OpenAL support with EAX effects, DirectSound EAX effects are done via an OpenAL wrapper (software emulation that translates the DirectSound calls into OpenAL and then is processed by the hardware).

One thing to look out for that the XG seems to use different op amps than the XM, with a different IC package no less.
